Ancient Ways

Maria Hurtado, Brewster, launches a dart with a spear thrower called an atlatl during the annual River Ramble at Rocky Reach Dam on Saturday. According to Tom Bailor of Pendleton, Oregon, the atlatl can accelerate a spear or dart 300 times faster than thrown by hand, and was a precursor to the bow and arrow. The River Ramble included exhibits and hands on activities related to Native American customs and local wildlife and habitat. It was hosted by the Chelan County PUD.

A state Department of Natural Resources investigation has concluded that tree branches chafing on a power line triggered the Aug. 19, 2015, fire near Twisp that claimed the lives of three U.S. Forest Service crew members.

Man dies, others rescued in Omak apartment fire

OMAK — An Omak man died in an apartment fire and a woman sprained her knee jumping from the roof of that burning  building at 101 N. Ash St. in Omak early this morning.
