Next Fall…A New Look

After 46 years the CBBN League will take on quite a new look for the 2012-13 school year. Instead of 15 schools in the league and divided into two divisions (seven 4A and eight 3A) there will be six schools in one league. The conference will have five 4A members - Davis, Eastmont, Eisenhower, Moses Lake and Wenatchee, and one 3A member – Sunnyside.

You can start planning for athletic activities as a number of the schedules for league contests are already figured out and published. Check the Wenatchee Panther Athletic website under League Information and click on the Big 9 logo.

Here’s a look at the basics of the league schedules.

Volleyball, Girls Soccer, Boys Soccer, Girls Tennis and Boys Tennis. Each will compete home and home with the other five schools for 10 league contests. All completion will be Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Girls Basketball and Boys Basketball. Each will compete home and home with the other five schools for 10 league contests. All dates will be doubleheaders…meaning both girls and boys will play on the same night in the same gym. No more one team playing at home while the other hits the road. Also, all games will be on Fridays and Saturdays. No more coming in from away games in the middle of Tuesday nights.

Football. Each 4A team will compete home and home with the other four 4A schools and play Sunnyside once, one year home and one year away.

Baseball and Softball. Each will compete three times with the other five schools for 15 league games. All games are Tuesdays and Saturdays (doubleheaders) and one opponent per week. Example: Tuesday Wenatchee goes to Moses Lake for one game and on Saturday the Chiefs come here for a doubleheader. The following year it’s the single game here and the twin bill there. Both sports play the same opponent each week, but at opposite schools.

Boys Track and Girls Track. Each will have three meets, all on Thursdays.

Girls Swimming and Boys Swimming. Each will have six meets and compete twice against the other five schools. There will be three home and three away, some dual and some 4-way.

Wrestling. Each will compete once with the other five schools.

Boys Cross Country and Girls Cross Country. There are two league meets

Bowling. A little different league arrangement here…drop Eastmont and add Ellensburg, Selah and West Valley for an 8-team league. Each will compete home and home with the other seven schools for 14 league contests.

Boys Golf and Girls Golf. Schedule not posted yet.

In the Beginning
The CBBN League started in 1966-67 as the Big Eight. With the new league setup next year, only half of the original members remain – Davis, Eisenhower, Moses Lake and Eisenhower. The others, Kennewick, Pasco, Richland and Walla Walla, bolted to form a new league along with some other schools..

Of the quartet of originals, only three have continual membership. In 1997-98 and 1998-99 Moses Lake dropped to the 3A classification and out of the league.
