VOLLEYBALL (1-0, 2-3-1)

Tuesday, Eisenhower (1-0, ?-?) home.

A major turnaround happened in this series in 2010.  Up until then it had been very much dominated by EHS (they won 75 percent).  But beginning four seasons ago the Panthers have won seven of eight, including the last two in a row.  The Cadets now lead the series 50-23-1.

Standings: Wenatchee 1-0, Eisenhower 1-0, Moses Lake 1-0, Eastmont 0-1, Sunnyside 0-1, Davis 0-1

What a beginning!  At 2-0-1 Wenatchee is off to their best three-game start in 19 years.  The last time their record was better was 1994 when they were 3-0 (three times they’ve started 3-0, 1989, ’93 and ’94).

Tuesday, Eisenhower (1-0, 2-2) away.

The Panthers head for Yakima with a four-game win streak over the Cadets.  WHS not only beat EHS twice in each of the last two years, they gave up nary a goal.  And with the four wins, Wenatchee edged ahead in the series 20-19-1.  On the Cadets’ turf the Panthers are 10-9-1.

Friday, Mt. Spokane (1-0-1) home.

This is the first meeting between the Panthers and Wildcats.  Mt. Spokane is a 3A school in the Greater Spokane 3A/4A League that opened its doors in 1997.  The Wildcats play Gonzaga Prep in their first league game today.  Against teams from the GSL, Wenatchee is 2-8.

Saturday, Eastlake (1-0-0, 2-1-1) home.

Following Mt. Spokane, Eastlake comes to town the next day, another foe Wenatchee will face for the first time.  The Wolves are from the KingCo 4A Conference.  The school opened in 1993 and is in Sammamish.  Against KingCo teams WHS is 0-2 (Redmond).

Standings: Wenatchee 1-0, Eisenhower 1-0, Moses Lake 1-0, Eastmont 0-1, Davis 0-1, Sunnyside 0-1

FOOTBALL (1-0, 1-1)

Home Opener.

This is the 2013 opening home game for Wenatchee.  In 105 previous openers the Panthers are 68-34-2.  Five times they’ve begun the home portion of their season with Moses Lake and WHS has won three, the most recent being 2005 (WHS 33, MLHS 0).  Most frequent foes to kick off the home season: Walla Walla 9, Blanchet 8, Waterville 8, Eastmont 7, Eisenhower 7, Kennewick 6 and Moses Lake 6.

Friday, Moses Lake (1-0, 2-0) home.

This will be the 60th game since these two schools first played in 1951.  They’ve played at least once a year every season except 1955, ’97, ’98 or 2002.

Wenatchee leads the series 49-10 and taken 15 of the last 18.  At home the Panthers are 28-3, and have been victorious in the last five.  A year ago the pair produced some offense.  Chiefs won 32-29 at their place and Panthers won 48-20 in the Apple Bowl.  The 32 in the first game are the most ML has ever scored in the series.

On the "most games played against" list the Chiefs are tied with Walla Walla for third with 59.

200 Road Wins

With their win Friday at Davis, Wenatchee has come home the victor 200 times when they’ve played away from the Apple Capital.  The first “away” win for WHS came on November 8, 1907 when they ventured to Waterville and blanked the home team 5-0.  Now in their 106th year, the Panthers are 200-170-12 in road games (53.9 percent).

The first road win came in the third season of the pigskin sport at Wenatchee High.  Both 1905 and ’06 were two-game seasons with all four games at home.  The Waterville win evened Wenatchee’s road record at 1-1.  The week prior they had traveled to Snohomish and lost 17-0.

The Panthers longest win streak in “away” games is 13 from 1969 to 1972.  And this may surprise folks.  From the second game of 1984 through 1990, Wenatchee lost 30 consecutive road games.

Standings: Moses Lake 1-0, Wenatchee 1-1, Eisenhower 1-1, Davis 1-1; Sunnyside 0-0, Eastmont 0-1
