MENS BASKETBALL (0-4, 6-11)

Friday, Treasure Valley (4-0, 11-5) home.

League leading Treasure Valley is the next opponent for the Knights.  The Chukars have slipped by four league foes by a total of 17 points (4.25 per game).  The Knights and Chukars have slugged out the past 16 games over seven seasons with each school winning eight.  Since the series started in 1978-79, the outfit from Ontario has won 19 to WVC’s 14.  A twist…at W.B. Smith Wenatchee Valley is 5-12 while in TVCC’s bailiwick the Knights are 9-5.

Saturday, Blue Mountain (0-4, 4-12) home.

From first to worst.  Friday top dog Treasure Valley, Saturday cellar dwelling…oops…I mean a very competitive battle between two teams tied in the standings.  It’s time for some pay back.  Blue Mountain has topped the Knights six times in a row and five times in the local gymnasium.  The Black and Silver first played the Pendleton club in 1983-84 and has won the majority of the games, 38 to 26.  Here on campus Wenatchee Valley has won 22 of 31.

Standings: Treasure Valley 4-0, Big Bend 3-1, Spokane 3-1, Columbia Basin 3-1, Walla Walla 2-2, Yakima Valley 1-3, Wenatchee Valley 0-4, Blue Mountain 0-4,

WOMENS BASKETBALL (0-4. 8-11)

Friday, Treasure Valley (0-4, 2-15) home.

The team coming to town Friday has taken their lumps so far.  Treasure Valley opened their season with a win over Centralia, lost the next four, defeated their alums and then dropped 11 straight by an average of 24.8 ppg.  The coming encounter is an important one for both teams.  The winner will have their first league victory as both the Knights and Chukars are 0-4 in the East.  The local five has swept TVCC in each of the last two seasons and has a four-game win streak in the series.  Overall WVC is up 17-7 and has won eight of 12 at home.

Saturday, Blue Mountain (2-2, 13-4) home.

Saturday’s opponent, Blue Mountain, started the campaign on a blue streak.  They won their first nine consecutive games.  They have leveled out and are 4-4 since December 22.  The Knights won both games a year ago and have a dominating 52-17 lead in the series.  At home WVC is even better with 29 victories in 34 games.

Standings: Columbia 4-0, Big Bend 3-1, Walla Walla 3-1, Blue Mountain 2-2, Spokane 2-2, Yakima Valley 2-2, Wenatchee Valley 0-4, Treasure Valley 0-4,

The Sports of Wenatchee Valley College

I’ve poked around for several years seeking what sports the college has had, what years they were played, who the coaches were and season-by-season records.  Over the next couple of weeks I’ll report some of what I’ve found.  I really hope there are folks out there in Knight Land that can add to, update or correct some of the information.

Reference to 14 sports has appeared in various places.  The men have had eight and the women six.

The first intercollegiate sport was men’s basketball which started in the 1946-47 school year, although as far as games are concerned they were all in 1947, the first game being January 3.

The second sports came in the spring of ’47, and one is a surprise – golf.  WVC finished seventh (last) in the 1947 WSJCAC tournament with a score of 809.  The other sport was tennis and they placed third in the WSJCAC tournament with eight points.

Volleyball was the first sport for women when started in the fall of 1974.  The winter of 1974-75 basketball began, but the games started in ’75…January 25 to be exact.

Here is what I’ve compiled thus far through this school year.
