6th AppleSox Reaches Majors
Blaine Hardy made his major league debut pitching for the Detroit Tigers this week. Hardy was with Wenatchee in 2006 and led the team with a 1.44 ERA. Along with Jason Hammel, Cole Gillespie, Clayton Mortensen, Tommy Milone and Steve Ames, the 6-2, 230-pound Hardy is the sixth former AppleSox to play Major League Baseball. All except Gillespie are pitchers. And what a staff Wenatchee had in ‘06. Of eight pitchers to throw 25-plus innings, three of them were Hardy, Mortensen and Milone.
Don’t Cry in Your Sarsaparilla
Yes, the hometown club is 5-5, lost two in a row, three of four and is being outscored 64 to 52.. BUT, it has happened twice before to the Sox in WCL play and they rebounded for winning seasons and playoff appearances both times. In 2007 they were 3-7 after 10 games and went on to finish second in the division and play in the first round of the playoffs. And there were was last season. After 10 contests they were 4-6, again placed second in the division, won their first round playoff series and played for the league pennant.
Look who’s leading the league in getting plunked. Wenatchee batters have been hit by pitches 17 times in 10 games. Individually Ty Jackson has been a plunkee five times and that ties for the league lead.
