Andrea Uchytil | Feist and Schauer named Women of Year

Business and Professional Women of Wenatchee on Oct. 16 named two local business women as the group’s 2013 Women of the Year.

Deborah Feist, owner of Allstate Insurance in East Wenatchee, and Shiloh Schauer, executive director of the Wenatchee Valley Chamber of Commerce, were chosen from four distinguished nominees that also included real estate broker Laura Mounter and mortgage adviser Traci Dry.

“It empowers us to honor various generations of up-and-coming women in our valley,” said Schauer, a member of BPW.

Feist has been an Allstate Insurance agent for 34 years. In her off-time, Feist enjoys reading, walking the dog, camping and, as a “pop culture nerd” keeping up with modern trends.

Feist said she strives in business to create relationships with customers. She takes care of them as a mother hen would take care of her chicks — nurturing and caring and offering advice on topics that aren’t even about insurance!

“Every day is a new day,” she says her mother used to tell her. For Feist, the question “how will you make this day count?” is a motivational tool.

Schauer is also motivated by family. Her mom was her rock as she grew up in a difficult home. And other strong women in the community also inspired her to strive yet see the human side of life.

She says they advised her: “don’t be a victim, be a victor,” and always ask “why?” and “what?”

Schauer stresses that having life goals and empowerment is what women need to value themselves. “ Follow your heart,” she says. “You have to believe in yourself before anyone else can believe in you.”

When not busy with Chamber activities, Schauer is an avid motorcyclist, runner and hiker. She also enjoys reading, hanging out with family and friends and working in the family orchard on a John Deere tractor.

Interviewing these two women has me thinking about who will be next year’s nominees. It’s great that we at BPW have the opportunity to highlight these women.

Andrea Uchytil is the marketing and social media chair for Business and Professional Women of Wenatchee, a local networking and support group.
