Butch Milbrandt may be best known as half of the team of two brothers who pioneered vineyard planting along the Columbia Basin's famed Wahluke Slope and Ancient Lakes regions. With nearly 3,000 acres of vineyard today sourcing dozens of award-winning wineries as well as their own rapidly growing wine label, the Milbrandt brothers are major players in Washington still developing wine industry.

Winemaker's Journal -- Ohme Gardens Wine and Food Gala rocks

Marco Martinez here filling in for Rick Steigmeyer. Rick had to work Saturday, so I filled in for him and attended Saturday evening's Ohme Wine & Food Gala. Lucky me! The annual event, organized by NCW Wine Country, is promoted as THE garden party of the summer. I won't argue with that. Hats off to Becky Driscoll and NCW Wine Country for pulling off a great event.Eight wineries, two cideries and nine eateries teamed up to provide food with matching pours. The selections featured both savory and sweet offerings.

Winemaker's Journal -- NCW wines just get better and better

Judging for the fifth North Central Washington Wine Awards is now history. Still a ways off is the big event when awards will be announced and award winning wines poured for the public at the 2015 Wenatchee Food and Wine Festival. Results of the judging will be kept under wraps until the event, Aug. 22, at the Town Toyota Center.

Chardonnay is one of the world's favorite white wines. It's the most purchased wine in the U.S., accounting for 20 percent of all wine sales. That's not to say it's loved by all. While many love the wine's buttery, snooty associations, others think of it as the Merlot of white wines, to be avoided lest risk of faked pomposity. And some people just don't like it because others do.
