Telling a story

I had an interesting email this week wondering why there weren't more youth parade photographs put online compared to the number of Warrior Challenge photos posted. My first reaction was to respond that in the youth parade, I spend a lot of time getting caption information on the pictures that I take so I'm pretty selective on what I take. Queen for a day

We published our annual photo package on the Apple Blossom queen, documenting a fraction of her life as queen, with and without her crown. I started the day with her at a ceramics shop and ended it with worship team practice. I thought it would be interesting to look back 25 years and see how I covered that queen. Hockey and stand-alones

These past seven days were filled with playoff hockey games and hunting for stand-alones. A stand-alone photograph is one that presents some news value to the readers without needing a written story to support it. Enough news is given in the caption to support the photograph. When the stories that reporters are writing don't lend themselves to strong pictures, news photographers take part in the great picture hunt. Colors not printable

Rarely do I take photographs that I'm worried won't be printed very well on our wonderful presses but earlier this week I made a picture under stage lights that I enjoy on my computer screen but when I change it over to colors that our presses use, it turns out very flat.
