Vicki Olson Carr | Shot and discus records fall in Chelan

Before Bill Veroske graduated in 1942, he set a Chelan High School record in the shot put with a heave of 50 feet, 7 inches. His strength and power were gained from stacking green lumber during summers at Harris sawmill in Ardenvoir and working in the apple orchard at the family ranch on the Entiat River.

Dan Sollom | My new gig: there's a new golf marshal in town

Back in the 1800s when the new marshal came to town, the mayor gave him a gun and a badge and sent him out to uphold the law. Not so, it seems, when you’re the new course marshal at Desert Canyon Golf Resort. Nope. No badge and no gun. It’s probably just as well because unlike the old west, being a course marshal is much more civilized. Or so I thought.

Panther girl golfers champions again. Baseball team #1 in state.

GIRLS GOLFLEAGUE CHAMPIONS!  With their 23rd consecutive league win yesterday, Wenatchee captured their fourth straight CBBN crown.  The Panthers were 20 strokes better than second-place Davis on the Moses Lake Country Club course.  WHS wrapped up the title with one match to go next week in Yakima.

WVC softball at home Friday and Saturday

SOFTBALL (9-7, 14-11)Friday, Big Bend (5-11, 6-16) home.- One might say the Knights have done fairly well against the Vikings the past nine seasons, like they won 34 of 35.- At Moses Lake last month WVC swept a twin bill 11-3 and 13-10.- Overall the Black and Silver lead the series 61-13.  At home they are 31-8, have won 17 in a row and 26 of 27.- Shelly Pflugrath is 54-12 vs. BBCC.

BOYS GOLFWednesday, Chelan-Gamble Sands Invitational- The Panthers head north tomorrow to Brewster for the second Chelan-Gamble Sands Invite hosted by Chelan H.S.- Last May WHS finished third in a field of 17 at this event.

Knights: Lots of action on the local diamonds Friday and Saturday

BASEBALL (0-0, 2-10)Wednesday, Blue Mountain (0-0, 6-8) away.- Today the Knights play the first and second of 28 league games as they open region action against Blue Mountain.- WVC has a 57-32 lead in wins over the Timberwolves, the only East opponent in which the Knights have the advantage.- On the Pendleton diamond the Black and Silver lead 28-17.- Last spring the pair split, each sweeping doubleheaders at home.- Of 89 games played, all have been league encounters except one regional game in 2009.- Dustin Willis is 12-4 vs. BMCC.

BOYS TENNIS (3-0, 5-0)Tuesday, Sunnyside (1-3, 2-3) away.- In 10 matches Wenatchee has never lost to Sunnyside.- The Grizzlies in league play beat Davis and lost to Eisenhower, Eastmont and Moses Lake.  In nonleague they beat Pasco.

Knight women hoop team in NWAC championship tourney

WOMENS BASKETBALL (25-5)Wenatchee Valley is in the NWAC championship tournament for the second year in a row, and this the 23rd time they’ve qualified in the 38 years of the event.- The gals open tourney play with Bellevue (12-2, 23-5) at 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon at Everett Community College.- The Bulldogs finished second in the North Region and have won 11 of their last 12.- In 26 meetings with Bellevue, WVC has been the winner 20 times.- The two have not played since 2008-09 and the Bulldogs have won the ...

Spring sports begin at WHS...three of nine teams in action this week.

GIRLS GOLFThe Panthers are on a roll.  They have won the CBBN championship three consecutive years and lost nary a league event in that time, winning 18 straight meets.  The man who heads this winning team is Doug Merrill who enters his 22nd season as coach.  Last spring, in addition to the league title, they won the district crown by a big margin and sent five golfers to state where they placed ninth.
