Rebar and barbecue

If you’re one of those folks that never get their fill of beer, barbecue and rebar, then plan to attend this week’s grand opening of Columbia River Steel Supply in East Wenatchee.

The new 13,000-square-foot facility, a long-planned expansion of Moses Lake Steel Supply, will be the site of tours and food (barbecue, micro-brews and wines) from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday. The building is on a three-acre tract in the Batterman Industrial Park near Pangborn Memorial Airport.

"We're a small, family-owned company that focuses on customer service first," General Manager Steve Rimple said in an interview earlier this year. "We've always loved the Wenatchee community and have had close ties with it for almost 60 years. We see opening here as a kind of coming home."

Rimple's grandfather, Monte Holm, first eyed Wenatchee back in 1954 as a possible location for his metal scrapyard. He eventually located in Moses Lake, but over the decades visited and re-visited the Wenatchee area, expanded his business contacts and made loads of friends.

The general manager said his company had been looking for an opportunity to expand into the Wenatchee area. It came two years ago when another steel supplier and fabricator shut its doors. "We were ready to make the move," he said.

The supply company offers a wide range of metals, pipe and tubing, fasteners, tools, abrasives, chains and cables, chemicals and paints and electrical supplies.

Details: Columbia River Steel Supply, 284 Urban Industrial Ave., East Wenatchee (across Grant Road from Pangborn Airport). Phone: 1-855-886-0180. Web:
