Crunch Pak at the Oscars?

And the winner for Best Snack at a Major Motion Picture Awards Ceremony is … well, who the hiccup knows?

The rumor whispered on the red carpet is that all the big stars and backstage crews will once again be munching on Crunch Pak sliced-apple snacks from behind-the-scene buffet tables at Sunday’s 85th Annual Academy Awards ceremony (4 p.m PST on ABC-TV).

“True, the rumor is rampant,” said Tony Freytag, Crunch Pak’s director of marketing. But in true Hollywood hush-hush fashion, “we’re not allowed to confirm it or deny it,” he said.

Last year, the Cashmere-based leader in the nation’s sliced-fruit industry, delivered 32 boxes of product — fruit, veggies, pretzels, dipping sauces, cheese chunks and more — as a healthy alternative to the usual pastries, hors d’oeuvres and cocktails served backstage at Tinseltown’s biggest event. You could hear the crunch all the way to Spielberg’s private ready room.

This year, the rumored Crunch Pak delivery should include Dipperz, the yummy packs of sweet apples or carrots with dipping sauces of caramel, chocolate, peanut butter or (for carrots) ranch dressing.

Oscars-watching tip: Look for dribbles of caramel on tux lapels during those too-long acceptance speeches.
