It’s the worst-kept secret since Hobby Lobby filed building plans with the City of East Wenatchee and responded to questions with, in effect, “Store? What store?”

Location scouts for Boise-based WinCo Foods, a discount grocery chain, were recently in Wenatchee and East Wenatchee looking for a place to open a store — either raw land for building from scratch or an existing building they could squeeze into.

Real estate agents were buzzing with the news, of course, as city officials escorted the scouts to various properties, including the now-vacant Food Pavilion store in Olds Station.

Employee-owned WinCo has 86 stores in seven western states and more than 14,000 employees. Most stores are open 24 hours a day and measure around 75,000 to 100,000 square feet. That means the old Food Pavilion store — at under 60,000 square feet — might be too small for WinCo.

Folks connected to that property have also said that, so far, no new tenant has been signed for the space.
