You may remember earlier in the year I wrote about being in first place in an annual contest (the National Press Photographers Association Annual Clip Contest) pitting me against other news photographers in Alaska, British Columbia, Yukon, Washington, and Oregon. While I was on vacation last week, the final month's clips were judged and I ended up in first place. Here is a list of the top 20 or so photographers and their point totals:
744 Don Seabrook/The Wenatchee World 614 Alan Berner/Seattle Times 570 Andrew Bronson/The Bellingham Herald 504 Eric Engman/The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner 482 Marc Lester/Anchorage Daily News 426 Erika Schultz/The Seattle Times 414 Robert Hallinen/Anchorage Daily News 344 Kai-Huei Yau/Tri-City Herald 274 John Wagner/Fairbanks Daily News-Miner 240 Mark Mulligan/The Daily Herald 236 Mark Malijan/Mark Malijan Photography 228 Paul Erickson/Tri-City Herald 224 Larry Steagall/Kitsap Sun 212 M Moon/Peninsula Clarion 210 Dan Bates/The Herald (Everett) 192 Lui Wong 184 Brandon Swanson/The Chronicle 174 Colin Mulvany/The Spokesman-Review 144 Erik Hill/Anchorage Daily News Jordan Stead/Western Washington University 134 Robert Brawdy/Tri-City Herald Meegan Reid/The Kitsap Sun
To me, this could be the most prestigious award I've ever received. It's especially encouraging because it is a year-long competition against all photographers independent of the size of circulation of their publications. Also, because all of the images that earned me points were taken within an hour's drive of Wenatchee.
Here are some of the images that earned me points in the later months last year.
I feel like I've truly been blessed to work in such a wonderful community and for a publication that supports good documentary photography.
