I went up the Methow valley on Saturday to photograph a biathlon competition at Liberty Bell High School. I looked forward to making pictures of an event I had only seen on television during Olympic competitions. The story focused on the sports group there and a sport that was gaining in interest in the valley.
And it went pretty much as I had expected. Kids on the ground shooting targets.
And of course the skiing.
But I'm discovering that beyond the expected, if I'm ready for it and have my eyes open for it, comes those moments that make events special and distinguishable. On one part of the course, the kids skied up a hill past some art work.
While the kids were shooting, a volunteer came by and swept snow and spent shell casings off the mats.
And at the finish, there was joy for some.
And frustration for others.
