Fire aftermath

I went to Quincy Monday to cover the aftermath of an apartment fire that left 24 people without a home. Making photographs of something like this just takes time and patience. It's a matter of getting to the location of the fire and waiting for something to happen that is newsworthy.

The truth be told...

Telling the story of a sporting event in a photograph or photographs can be a challenge. When I'm shooting a game between two teams from our circulation area, I pretty much concentrate during the game finding the pivotal play or if I miss that, find something positive to publish showing the winner.

Election night

Tuesday was my night to work (with a staff of two now, Mike Bonnicksen and I alternate evening shifts) so that meant documenting election night. But before I could get to election coverage, I drove to Cashmere to photograph the girls state playoff win over Connell. Click for gallery here.

Finding something unique

Looking around for an interesting photograph and it is hard to get around making pictures of the fall leaves. But since we have already run many photographs of that subject in the newspaper already, I was in search of something different. Down at Riverfront Park, I noticed a big puddle in the parking lot and saw a nice reflection spot.

More than cute kids

As a photojournalist, I went downtown to photograph the Halloween candy giveaway with the idea to photograph more than just cute kids. I wanted to look for moments that told a story.

First hockey shoot of the season

Saturday night I covered my first hockey game of the season. For the most part I enjoy photographing a hockey game but even with the easy shooting conditions of a well lighted arena, I have a hard time getting good hockey action. Players and refs seem to block my pictures of action around the goals.

Two better than one

Most of the time, I'm trying to capture a story in one photograph. But there are times where two photographs are a lot more meaningful and play off of each other.

Homecoming

Having the chance to make photo galleries motivates me to go beyond what may normally be published in the newspaper and keep an eye out for interesting images on the fringes. That happened at the Eastmont homecoming on Friday night. The big game between rivals Wenatchee and Eastmont would be on the sports page but for the gallery, I could also include homecoming festivities at halftime.

Slot cars

This week I went to a slot car race in Monitor. It brought back memories of going to the Wenatchee bowling alley with my parents for league bowling in the 1960s and early 70s and watching races on a big track the owners built next to the south lanes. I was too young to drive the cars but I remembering wanting to soooo bad.

Paintball

I was at Wenatchee High School a month ago and saw a poster up on a wall promoting the first meeting of a group of paintball enthusiasts. I made a quick photo of the poster and called the teacher/adviser, finding out there was a first tournament planned for the weekend I was scheduled to work. A quick call to the lead student and I was set for a morning of fun.

Memorial

I went to the Leavenworth Ski Hill late last month to photograph a memorial ski run to honor the three men who were caught up and killed in an avalanche on Stevens Pass. I wasn't sure what to expect but I had read that at the end of the memorial, skiers would be coming down the hill with lights of some kind. I had photographed a similar scene at Mission Ridge on a New Years Eve celebration but it had been about 20 years ago. I looked up some lens ...

Interesting lighting

As a documentary photographer, sometimes I end up making photographs in some very unusual lighting. Last Saturday night during the rail jam at Mission Ridge was one example. The organizers had the normal lights that are set up for skiing on the course but they also brought in two portable lighting units to intensify the light. I appreciated the extra light "volume" but it made for some difficult situations. I had to be careful of what I was shooting and from where.

The count

I covered the crowd of Town Toyota Center supporters who gathered for a photograph on the arena ice Monday night. Beyond covering it as a news event by showing an overall of some of the activity - beyond the staged, "official" photograph - I needed to make an image that I could create an accurate count from Tuesday morning. I didn't think we would be able to rely on estimates from the organizers and as what I hoped would be a much more unbiased tally, I made this image just ...

A surprise at the finish

I went up the Methow valley on Saturday to photograph a biathlon competition at Liberty Bell High School. I looked forward to making pictures of an event I had only seen on television during Olympic competitions. The story focused on the sports group there and a sport that was gaining in interest in the valley.

Snow photographs

With the first major snow of the year, I've been out looking for interesting weather images for the newspaper. Yesterday I came up with a couple.

Photos of a blowout

I went to Entiat last night to photograph the girls game with Warden, specifically to make some pictures of Entiat's star player, Mandy Southard. It's an odd gym with the baseline on one side so shallow I can't stand, let alone sit there to take photographs and on the other, there is almost too much room. I ended up shooting pictures from the stands in the first half before moving to the larger baseline at court level. How I do like to be low, shooting at the player's eye level.

Best and worst of 2011

I can't believe we are halfway through January already! Some time back I put together a photo gallery of what I think was my best work of 2011 - here's a link to that.
