Do you sometimes want a quick, simple lunch without having to wait somewhere? Yesterday at noon I was in our local Dan's Market - now owned and operated by Eric and Lisa Worthen, son Wes and daughter Alex - and found a line of people at the deli counter in the rear of the store. Because "..inquiring minds want to know..", I stepped up to see what was happening. Someone said to me, "She's making fish tacos today."

First, who was "she" and since when could you get a fish taco at Dan's? It was my turn to order, but I had to know what "she" (Deb, the lunch lady) was making. I learned that this was the first day for these, and they were going fast. Baked cod and freshly-made-right-there coleslaw on a flour taco was just right for a light, quick lunch. I got mine to go, but first asked Deb about the lunches.

She told me this: I have begun putting together lunch specials for the week.

Mondays we serve a BBQ meatball sandwich on a hoagie with Swiss cheese and red onions.

Tuesdays I feature a slider of Swiss cheese and honey ham on a Hawaiian roll with a mustard poppy seed sauce; it has been really popular.

On Wednesday, today, I have begun making fish tacos; so far not much feedback but I have already heard many positive comments.

Our Thursday special is a French dip sandwich on Homefires bread, with Swiss cheese and au jus .

Deb doesn't work Fridays or the weekend so these are the specials so far. I wouldn't be surprised if she comes up with a Friday special, too, before long.

And don't miss Homefires Bakery, at the back next to the deli section, with its array of fresh-baked breads and tempting pastries. I love the chocolate croissant, and occasionally take home some dog biscuits to nibble, topped with a sharp, salty cheese. This goes well with wine.

Dan's Market is small and cannot stock as much as the big stores, but it has a very loyal following who value the friendliness and the family atmosphere of the store. Produce quality is very good and fresh food prices are usually better than in the larger stores. Need assistance finding something, or taking your bags to the car? Someone is always available to give you personal attention. And now...lunch specials?

I think I'm going to need to go to Dan's again, soon. Perhaps on Wednesday, around noon.
