One more. Barnabas Collins passes

For those of you looking forward to Johnny Depp playing Barnabas Collins in the new Dark Shadows movie, no, he's not dead. Alas, the original (and still the greatest) Barnabas, Johnathan Frid, passed away Friday at the age of 87 in a Hamilton, Ontario (his home town) hospital of natural causes.

Dark Shadows could probably be considered the Twin Peaks of it's era, it's era being 1967 through 1971. Creepy, with Frid in the lead vampire roll, the daily soap opera was a smash with teenagers and young adults, coming on at 4pm. I remember class schedules being altered when I was in college so we could camp out in front of the TV.

Collins (Frid) set the model for a new kind of vampire, injecting depth and some regret into the role, expressed more recently in movies like Twilight and Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

I assume they are in mourning in Collinsport, Maine and there is a black bow on the front door of Collinwood Manor. Best wishes to Victoria, David, Laura and Quentin Collins, the staff at Collinwood Manor, and all the vampires, ghosts and other such who inhabited the show. Mr. Depp, Johnathan Frid has left some big shoes for you to fill. Good luck. You'll need it.

Oh boy. Fangs for the memories, and rest in peace. Finally.
