  • Spit 1
I was looking forward to the potential for fun photographs at the first annual cherry pit spitting contest at Pybus Public Market to start my Fourth of July work day. But knowing there are some locations in the market that are very poorly lit, I was also a bit concerned. Lighting can make or break even the best photographic event. When I arrived though I knew I could get something good as the organizers had set it up in an area lit by large windows. It was then just a matter of timing to get the pit coming out of the mouth. I had many choices during my editing back at the office and picked this one of Molly Akers, Bellevue, mainly because of the bounce in her hair.

There were some minor reactions to success or failure but when Phil Hodge spit one past the measuring tape, he exploded in happiness. It was a blessing that the official measurer was looking for the pit under the scorer's table in the background.

I'm always looking for detail photographs that help tell the story and noticed this sign early on. When Adair Gust's first attempt didn't make it past the starting line I was able to get the pit in the photograph too.
  • fireworks 1
Usually covering fireworks on the fourth is pretty easy - just show up at the park and take a bunch of pictures of people having fun and watching the show. But this year, the focus was more on what would happen in the residences. I staked out a spot where I could shoot down a residential street, over Okanogan Avenue, where I had seen aerials going off and waited for this picture. I like the power lines in the photograph but wished the timing would have worked out to get a car traveling on the street near the explosion.
  • fireworks 2
I finished the day off after finding a neighborhood in East Wenatchee where residents gathered their fireworks together and had a big show on the street. I tried to show a bunch of the spent fountains in the foreground and was fortunate that an illegal aerial shot off from another neighborhood in the background.
