Winemaker's Journal — Fencing with deer

After getting a taste of ripe grapes in my vineyard last fall, resident deer have decided to stick around until the next crop. As appetizers while they await their main course, they've discovered young grape leaves and vine shoots are much more delicious than leaves from the surrounding pear orchard, judging by clear evidence of their grazing.

Telling a story

I had an interesting email this week wondering why there weren't more youth parade photographs put online compared to the number of Warrior Challenge photos posted. My first reaction was to respond that in the youth parade, I spend a lot of time getting caption information on the pictures that I take so I'm pretty selective on what I take. But I also think I only photograph those things on the parade route that tell some kind of a story and not just any float or entry that happens by. ...

Queen for a day

We published our annual photo package on the Apple Blossom queen, documenting a fraction of her life as queen, with and without her crown. I started the day with her at a ceramics shop and ended it with worship team practice. I thought it would be interesting to look back 25 years and see how I covered that queen. In 1989, Stephanie Smith was the Apple Blossom queen. She was from Wenatchee High School and the daughter of an Eastmont teacher who I had as an advisor in annual staff ...
