Cherry Poppin' Daddies-The Show

I am a bit slow here but, oh well. Last weekend at Ephrata, on the front steps of the court house, "Basin Summer Sounds" took place featuring numerous performers during the two day musical event including Saturday's headliner, "Cherry Poppin' Daddies", a band I've been trying to catch for then last 15 years.

The eight piece swing style band hails from Eugene Oregon and was formed in 1989. The band currently consists of, Joe Freuen-trombone since 2012, William Seiji Marsh-guitar and Willie Matheis-tenor sax both since 2010,  Kevin Congleton-drums since 2008, Joe Manis-alto and baritone sax since 2006 and from the 1989 beginning Dana Heitman-trumpet, Dan Schmid-bass and front man lead vocalist Steve Perry....not that one but this one.

They started at 9:00 (first time I've seen the headliner at this event start on time...kudo's) and did a 70 minute set with an oncor. During their set, they played many songs off of their most famous album 1997 "Zoot Suit Riot" including "Zoot Suit Riot", "Brown Derby Jump", "Dr. Bones", "Ding Dong Daddy", "Here Comes The Snake" and "Drunk Daddy" They also play a few from their newest album, 2013 "White Teeth Black Thoughts" along with an old standard or two plus select songs from their other six albums. Though the crowd seemed small compared to previous years the band was well received.

If you haven't taken in the Basin Summer Sounds I would advise doing so. It's one of my favorite venues with it's huge stage, awesome sound system, professional lighting, plenty of room to stand or sit or watch from the beer garden, it's close and best of all....it's free.

The following are a few favorites from the show.

From "Zoot Suit Riot" is "Brown Derby Jump".

Can't wait until next July to see what band Summer Sounds brings in.
