To be recognized as The World’s Best something — anything, really — is an accomplishment worthy of celebration and swagger. It is also an occasion for a bit of well-earned self-promotion.
In the month since the 2014 winners were announced by The Wenatchee World, that iconic apple stamped with the World’s Best title has been popping up all over the valley, as winning companies base advertising and marketing campaigns around their awards.
There’s a new billboard on Valley Mall Parkway in East Wenatchee heralding Patriot Plumbing, Heating and Cooling’s two awards (Best Plumbing and Best Heating/Cooling), and a billboard that’s been up for much of the last year on North Wenatchee Avenue celebrating Clear View Janitorial, Inc.’s 2013 win for Best Janitorial Service. (Clear View won again this year.) And it’s hard to miss the banner out in front of Button Jewelers on Mission Street that alerts passersby to the store’s 2014 win for Best Jewelry Store.
You’ll see the World’s Best icon featured in advertisements for winning companies in our own paper, as well as in the pages of other local publications. We’ve even spotted the image on a car window sticker.
The World’s Best apple is all over the Internet, too, used as the profile picture by several winners on social media, and featured prominently on many homepages. That’s fitting, since the World’s Best voting was conducted entirely online this year.
And companies continue to find new ways to use the awards to promote their businesses and thank loyal customers, like when DeCamp-Toftness Chiropractic (Best Chiropractor) teamed up with Dutch Bros. (Best Coffee Shop) last month to offer a drawing for coffee cards, a massage and movie tickets.
Even now, when a heap of information about just about any business is a quick Google search away, when it comes time to call a plumber, most folks just want to know the name of the guy their neighbors like. It’s the same for any number of decisions about which companies we give our business to, whether we’re deciding on a lawyer, a day spa, a dog groomer or a funeral home. We like to know who our friends trust, and we value the opinions of others in the community.
