Veterans Day -- honoring all who served

Veterans Day -- honoring all who served

November has fallen upon us once again, and the stress meter is beginning to spike. As we begin to hustle and bustle around the city in preparation for the holiday season, the anticipation for the first snowfall is almost too much to bear, and we fall into hasty habits.

Nov. 3 Indie Kids

Hello by Adele: “Monumental” is a perfect word for Adele. Her voice is strong and powerful and clear, but also so feminine. At the rate she’s going she’s going to be the voice of a generation. An Aretha Franklin for Millennials. This song is the first single released from her new album, “25”, due out in late November and I can’t wait to hear more!

My Body’s a Zombie For You by Dead Man’s Bones: Dead Man’s Bones is a one-album side project of Hollywood heartthrob Ryan Gosling. In addition to being incredibly good looking, the guy can sing and play piano too! I get this album out every October. It’s creepy, in a fun way. Every song features the Silverlake Conservatory Children’s Choir and kids’ backup vocals make it extra spooky.

“When I Get My Hands On You” by The New Basement Tapes: If you like Bob Dylan you owe it to yourself to check out this project. Assembled by legendary producer T-Bone Burnett, The New Basement Tapes is a superband with such esteemed musicians as Elvis Costello, Marcus Mumford, Jim James of My Morning Jacket and more. This entire “Lost On The River” album is made up of songs derived from handwritten manuscripts by Bob Dylan. Yep, let that sink in…

Bakers and beyond: Seeking creative foodies

Bakers and beyond: Seeking creative foodies

I’m no culinary artist, but I like to think that I’m a decent cook (meaning I don’t make my fiancé gag when I create new cuisines). With a passion for lemon zests, the crackling of olive oil, and sauteing, cooking is accompanied by enjoyment.

Go! Spotify Playlist, October 6: Mad World

“Black Sun” by Death Cab for Cutie: Say what you want about Death Cab and its frontman Ben Gibbard, but old Ben knows how to write a song real good. This one’s off the band’s new album released this year. Somehow a bit of the impetuous angst-ridden tone of 90s grunge finds voice in Gibbard’s music, but it’s understated and more sophisticated. Like Nirvana for grown ups. I’d recommend this band to a 15-year-old or a 50-year-old alike, it’s just plain good (and Gibbard’s from Bremerton too).

We live in this world of smartphones, self driving cars and selfie sticks — but many of us still enjoy the distinct feel of a newspaper, the look of pressed ink and the idea that the print world is still around. However, actually having the paper at your fingertips can be tricky from time to time in our busy lives. When the paper isn’t always handy, our new Digital Edition will be readily available to take its place for anyone who has a print or online subscription.

5 worthy Instagram accounts

Nat Geo, NY Times, Kim Kardashian, ESPN or Cats of Instagram. I’m sure you follow at least one of these accounts on Instagram, right? As stimulating as it is to see a selfie of Kim Kardashian run across your news feed, I have some new suggestions for Instagram accounts that will actually interest you.

Go! Spotify Playlist - Sept. 29: Cover Me

“Bad Blood” by Ryan Adams: Ryan Adams recently released a track-for-track remake of Taylor Swift’s album “1989” and it’s been making quite the splash. Some say it’s brilliant, others deride it as nothing more than a publicity stunt. Personally I think it’s brave and interesting. He brings a depth and nuance to Swift’s music that I didn’t even think was there. It’s definitely worth a listen.

Dom's Spotify Playlist: Sept. 22: Fall back

“Never Come Down” by Brave Shores: Fall is in the air and it’s back-to-school time. Every back-to-school season deserves a few tight, fun little pop songs to remember it by. This one is a good song to strut to – it builds well, has an air of mischief and is just plain fun. Every student needs a few songs in the walkman (or its modern equivalent) to boost the old confidence. It was “Touch the Sky” by Kanye West and Lupe Fiasco for me Freshman year of college, and it made ...

Go! Spotify Playlist: Bon Voyage!

“Rio” by Hey Marseilles:This song is just plain fun, but also complex and soaring. It will make you want to dance. The reason I chose it is because Hey Marseille played Caffe Mela last week and I wanted to give a shout out to the lady responsible for keeping live music alive at Mela, Alli Steblina. You’re doing a great job Alli!

Shopping local benefits community

In preparation for writing this piece, I googled “shopping local” purely out of curiosity. One article that caught my attention was a piece that Forbes published by the contributor Nickel, titled “Shopping Local vs. Shopping Locally.” It is a great read to truly understand how the two differ.

August 25: Into The Fire

“Into The Fire” by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band: “May your strength give us strength, may your faith give us faith, may your hope give us hope, may your love give us love.” Springsteen wrote “Into The Fire”for the firefighters who lost their lives on Sept. 11, but it’s a fitting choice to honor the firefighters who were hurt and killed last week near Twisp. Songs and words fail to describe the sacrifice.

Fire season proves community correspondence

This past winter was mild, and then add in this summer’s early and dreadful heat —  the outcome created is that of a disastrous one for this year’s fire season. If you have lived in North Central Washington for long, it becomes second-hand knowledge that late summer usually entails heavy smoke and torrid days. However, it seems as though Mother Nature’s wrath hit too hard this year, leaving all of us to play catch up.

Go! Spotify List - Top Picks August 18, 2015

“Nevermind” by Leonard Cohen: As eerie and disturbing as it is hypnotic,, “Nevermind” is perfect intro for the second and most recent season of HBO’s True Detective. The finale was last week and I chose this song in part as a homage to that stunning series, but also because it’s just plain cool. No one growl/croons like Cohen and at 80, this old Canadian poet’s still got it. This track is from an album released just this May.
