Dark nighttime skies enhance our enjoyment of life as well as the environment

It is great that the Chelan PUD has displayed an interest in protecting the night skies by eliminating some unnecessary light pollution. In past years this subject has not generated much interest within the PUD.  Minimizing light pollution might cost a small amount of money and an educational effort but it is an illustration of how the PUD can show they care for issues dealing with the quality and sustainability of life in Chelan County.

Eight years ago the Board of Commissioners were presented information encouraging a Dark Skies initiative but there was no interest by the majority of commissioners or management. Adequate lights for night safety can be accomplished without eliminating star gazing or disrupting the habits of insects, birds or animals requiring darkness to live lives crucial for the environment and the production of the food. Protecting the environment from nighttime light pollution is more than enjoying the stars.

Let the PUD Commissioners know that maximizing dark skies at night is just as important as saving the runs of salmon but much less expensive.
