Winemaker's Journal — Wonderful evening at the NCW Wine Awards

The North Central Washington Wine Awards seems to have found a home at the Town Toyota Center.

More than 400 people attended the event Saturday to taste the region's best wines and sample its best foods. Some 35 wineries were there pouring tastes of their award winning wines. About a dozen restaurants, caterers and other chefs brought food.

The fun and fanfare was all about the wine. Foothills magazine announced winners of their 3rd annual wine competition, judged by a panel experts overseen by Andy Perdue and Eric Degerman of Great Northwest Wine. Stories about the competition's big winners will be in the upcoming issue of Foothills magazine. The issue will be distributed statewide to get the word out about the sensational wineries here.

Silvara Vineyards took home the night's biggest award, winning Best of Show, Best Red Wine and a gold medal for its 2010 Quartette Red Blend. Silvara, located off Highway 2, three miles east of Leavenworth, is owned by professional golfer Cindy Rarick and Gary Seidler.

Jones of Washington won Best Rosé for its 2012 Rose of Syrah. Jones also won a gold medal for its 2012 Riesling.

Cave B Estate Winery won Best White for its 2012 Sauvignon Blanc. Its 2012 Unoaked Chardonnay and 2010 Syrah also won gold medals.

Chateau Faire Le Pont's 2009 Carmenere won a double gold medal to go along with gold medals for the Wenatchee winery's 2009 Malbec, 2009 Sangiovese and 2009 Mourvedre.

Ginkgo Forest also won a double gold, for its 2008 Cabernet Franc. Ginkgo Forest also won a gold medal for its 2010 Barbera.

Milbrandt Vineyards was also a big winner with four gold medals for its red wines.

The Wine Awards has staged its event at different locations each of its three years. Most people I talked to agreed the Town Toyota Center was a good fit as attendance for the region's biggest wine event grows year by year.

Congratulations to all this year's winners!
