North Central Washington wineries proved that their wines can compete with the best at the Seattle Wine Awards.

NCW wines won an impressive 32 double gold medals at the competition, which included more than 1,000 entries from wineries all around the state. The Seattle judging is the state's largest wine competition. Winners were announced Thursday.

Milbrandt Vineyards of Mattawa came away with five double gold medals. Mellisoni Vineyards of Chelan and Cave B Estate Vineyards, George, won four double gold medals each. Jones of Washington, Quincy, and Tsillan Cellars, Chelan, each won three double gold medals. Cairdeas Winery of Manson won two double gold medals. Fifteen other NCW wineries won one double gold medal each.

NCW wines also won 15 gold, 20 silver and 17 bronze awards. Judges gave out about 850 medals in all, in 22 categories. About 23 percent of the awards were double gold.

The results offer substantial proof that NCW wineries produce some of the state's and the world's best wines. Congratulations all!

The next big competition is our own North Central Washington Wine Awards. Get your wines in now if they're not already entered. Judging is June 5, but the awards will be kept secret until the awards gala event Aug. 10.
