Parents charged in death of teen
" I do know he would be alive today if not for the parents being neglectful." There was no neglect, it was very intentional. They followed their faith and although I disagree with their decision I do not believe they should be criminally liable. A seventeen year old girl can decide without parental approval to abort her baby, why can't a seventeen year old boy decide not to go to the doctor. Someones child dies either way. What I see here that scares me is the precedent. Faith is no longer a personal choice. It must be state approved. By the way, those of us with faith do believe He was healed that day. He is alive and healthy with his Lord and Savior.Posted by Tim on Feb. 9 -

I'm with Suz. I love my IPad. It's a lot more convenient than the computer and also fun. I'm pretty good at Angry Birds. My six year old grandson taught me how to play. He's moved on to Asphalt 6, a car racing app. I'll stick with Angry Birds. Oh, and it's great for music too. I have a dock for it and it's better than a stereo. Great sound!Posted by Mom on Feb. 9 -
State pushes whooping cough booster as outbreaks rise
I can remember having whooping cough in the 1950s. You coughed so much you couldn't catch your breath. Your cough/voice began to sound like it was coming from an oil drum. Can't recall how long it lasted but you often ended up getting sick to your stomach as it ran its course. Also used to inhale steam kettle vapors for some reason. Lots of vicks vaporub. Don't recall anyone dying but sometimes you wished you would. Wouldn't wish it on anyone.Posted by TerryFinn on Feb. 9 -

So I think the thing that irritates me more than anything about this case and similar cases, is not just from the medical stand point of i,t which I know so well being a nurse, but that Luke, one of Jesus' disciples was a doctor. I think that God works through his people who He allows to have the knowledge of helping people. We are here to do His work and this is not the old testament. God doesn't just come down and do these outstanding miracles all the time like He once did. Things changed when Jesus died on the cross. It's just sad when such interpretations are taken so literally and someone so young had to die over something that is so easily taken care of these days. I have witnessed many miracles working in the ER and ICU and all I'm saying is I do what I know God has allowed me to do. My heart goes out to the parents that lost their son, but at the same time I am sad that such a young kid lost his life at what I look at as just being naive.Posted by saints82 on Feb. 9 -

What I do understand is that he would be alive today if his parents had sought medical treatment. Instead, he died a slow painful death and they are responsible for it so murder charge is absolutely appropriate. That's a fact.Posted by mountainlion on Feb. 9 -

Voters may face 2 ballot measures on gay marriage
The Supreme Court might not accept the California case. The California legislature approved gay marriage. The initiative to overturn that approval passed and was then challenged. The question the appeals court decided was narrow. Can a preexisting right be taken away by majority vote? At this time California is the only state that question would apply to. The Supreme Court usually only takes cases with broader application. If an initiative passes in Washington, then the 9th circuits decision would also apply here. That may mean that the Supreme Court will take the case. Regardless, the Appeals Courts decision means that any initiative in Washington would be declared unconstitutional at this time.Posted by milo on Feb. 9 -

Not a bad idea in theory, but depending on whom you'd care to listen to, it's not necessarily the foreign regimes that are bringing in the heroin. At least, not without some high-level collusion from the "good" guys over here in the states. Consider all the heroin from the Southeast Asian "Golden Triangle" and how big of a deal that was to our CIA even during the Viet Nam conflict: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Politics_of_Heroin_in_Southeast_AsiaPosted by Chuck on Feb. 9 -

You are calling me ignorant? Maybe you should better know the medical neglect laws then. There is exemption for actively practicing families of faith who choose to not seek medical attention. The Swezeys are actively practicing and they believe with every ounce of their being that what they did was the right thing to do because they stuck to their belief system. If Zakk had asked to go to the hospital, they would have taken him. no questions asked. But since Zakk never asked, and I do not doubt that, they didn't. Double check your "facts" before you start judging this family just because you don't understand or agree.Posted by 1anonymous1 on Feb. 9 -

You just completely missed my entire point. They are a good family, doing what they know best how to do. Neither of their other sons who are both well above the age of 18 have chosen to seek medical attention. Well said Chuck. I too believe that to be the case. And then, when we see the kids grab the drugs and begin to self medicate, we as a society look for someone or something to blame, never for a moment believing that it could be something they learned from us. "br" "Ask your Dr. if _________ is right for you" is just an acceptable way of saying: "Ask your pusher if he has anything that will give you a more intense high".Posted by JimboBear on Feb. 9 -

For those of you who don't know the Swezey family, shame on you for passing judgement. I was very close with Zakk (that's how he liked it spelled). I went to school with him, we were the same age. He was a very talented, intelligent and wonderful person. As are his parents. While I am not a person of faith, and do not agree with their religious guidelines, in no way do I feel that the Swezeys should have to face this sort of harassment. They are wonderful parents and were great members of the community. They were proud donors to the athletic clubs as well as other extracurricular activities. They are a family always willing to help another in need. I had plenty of talks with Zakk and his brothers about their faith. Not to try to judge them, but to try to understand. They all said that their parents never forced the religion on them, and that they freely chose to believe the way they did. Never once did I hear them complaining of being treated poorly. I wish you could have been there for the memorial service and the funeral. The entire Pateros High School gymnasium was full. The baseball team was in their garb, and retired Zakk's jersey. The band played his favorite songs. Zakk's friends spoke about their feelings, but at no point in time did ANYONE accuse them of doing wrong. They only expressed sentiment for their loss. Everyone who could drive, had packed cars full of friends and family for the drive to the cemetary. The graveside service was beautiful and tasteful. The parents, were distraught as any parents who had lost a child. Those of you who are condemning Jalea and Greg, are pitiful people. They are not murderers, and they are not dangerous people. They were actively practicing their right as AMERICAN CITIZENS to practice the religion of their choice and they upheld those beliefs throughout all of this pain and suffering. Do all the readers here and the Swezey's of keeping your ignorance to yourself unless you know first hand what it was like losing Zakk. Rest in peace bud! Two verses that I remembered having to do with faith: Matthew 17:20 He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” This verse is interesting to me on multiple levels, but mainly because it is the disciples who are questioning faith. These are the individuals who actually followed Jesus around and many of them literally witnessed healings etc. However, even many direct followers seemed to lack the quality of faith that performs miracles. James 2:14-26 "14 What does it profit, my brethren, if a man says he has faith but has not works? Can his faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is ill-clad and in lack of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and filled," without giving them the things needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. 18 But some will say, "You have faith and I have works." Show me your faith apart from your works, and I by my works will show you my faith. 19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe--and shudder. 20 Do you want to be shown, you shallow man, that faith apart from works is barren? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered his son Isaac upon the altar? 22 You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by works, 23 and the scripture was fulfilled which says, "Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness"; and he was called the friend of God. 24 You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone. 25 And in the same way was not also Rahab the harlot justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way? 26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so faith apart from works is dead." This verse is also interesting. It points out that faith often needs some sort of action. You are believing that God will take care of you, but you are not simply thinking that you are in your own bubble. When God told Noah that there would be a flood, doubters pointed and laughed. What did Noah do? He believed that God would bring the flood. However, he did not simply sit and wait for the flood and expect God to keep hime afloat for weeks on end. No, he had faith and took action, by building the arc. God saw to it that his faith on action would keep him from drowning and survive the storm. The same could be said for faith healing. One must have faith in God's healing. However, one should also take action (through doctors). Who's to say that God's healing can't come in the form of a capable doctor?Posted by nickwinters on Feb. 9 -

Waterville teachers plan to ax union affiliation
I am a St. John graduate and have also worked in public and private schools. The small rural communities seem to pull together and work out problems better without demands from outside and draining $$ to unknown activities. Though I enjoyed a few union benefits, I didn't want my dues used for certain national activities. I also noticed the built-in defensiveness between administration and teachers that I didn't experience in the private school. It seemed there was more focus on what's best for the child's learning environment.Posted by kchristensen on Feb. 9 -

It wasn't that long ago that papers in the UK were abuzz with the following story of trace levels of Prozac in the drinking water: http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2004/aug/08/health.mentalhealth In the '50's, Tofranil use was rampant among housewives. If memory serves correctly, Hugh Hefner dedicated a goodly chunk of a couple of Playboy Magazine issues to that cause, stating flatly the sheer tonnage of the stuff prescribed in 1959. A similar initiative was struck down in California very recently. Which begs a question: why don't our legislators hold off on putting this to a vote until that case goes through the Supreme Court? Fine, but if we follow that road to its forseeable wall, your way would have the state removing children from homes on the grounds that their parents' faith puts said children at risk. And honestly, do we really want to go there? If we do, words on the street and in the courtrooms could get pretty ugly in a hurry. And I've met Sloan. Knew him to be a practicing Catholic who ran a successful small town legal practice in those days. He's a good man, regardless of any personal disagreement I may want to see in his reasoning on this. I am dismayed at the intentions of the state to make this family defend a religous freedom in court. When should a family decide that a 17 year old (who could be tried for a crime in a state court as an adult)should not have the right to decide that he or she can wait for medical attention. The idea that there was a moment in time at which religious belief should be put aside and the "interest" of the state take over is arbitrary at best. Do the Sloans have a bias against this church? Do we have any one outside of Okanagon county advising the Sloans to prosecute or not? Are we facing an "official" wall of "this is what we are going to do, don't try to tell us differently."Posted by jbar on Feb. 9 -

Would anybody care to entertain the possibility that mood enhancement via chemicals is a learned behavior from the top down? Got a problem? go to the doctor, get a pill. In a bad mood? go to the doctor, get a pill. Dissatisfied with your life? no need to change anything- the AMA will see to it that you're medicated into compliance. And the kids in the next room see this as the norm, and start seeking chemicals from their little friends when they feel a little off. Sorry, but I find it hard to believe that the city which introduced "Dr Prozac" to the world a few years ago would see things any differently.Posted by Chuck on Feb. 9 -

I am so glad to see this out in the open and thank you Dee Riggs for looking into this rising problem in our valley. Parents need to be aware that this is a very real issue. It's so easy to think, "oh no, my kid would never do heroin!" Maybe a little pot or alcohol, but never anything hardcore. The kids using heroin now didn't think they were doing anything hardcore when they decided to experiment with those prescription drugs from mom and dad's medicine chest. They were prescribed by a doctor after all, right? It's not long before they are hooked on opiates and oxy's on the street quickly become too expensive. It doesn't take long for them to figure out there is a cheap alternative that is the same as that manufactured heroin, it's real heroin. Heroin addicts of today are not the same as your perceived notion of what a heroin addict looks like. If crime hasn't risen it's because these new addicts are stealing from mom and dad and other family members to fund their habit and mom and dad are too ashamed to turn their own kids in and/or file police reports. Just seeing this story in the paper tells me that this issue is becoming a problem in the Wenatchee Valley. I really hope the police will stay on top of it.Posted by WantsJustice on Feb. 9 -

Wenatchee's drug problem is worse than it ever has been. It discusts me to see people that you once knew as normal, now are digging the hole of black tar heroin. The crime may not have taken an upswing yet, but give it time, it will, there are so many couch pharmicists in the valley, and some of those people all they do is just sell their methadone pills and some have realized that they can't get the money out of their pills, so they buy and re-sell heroin, methadone is a common use among heroin users, it helps with their withdrawls, those methadone pills sell for $10/pill. Its a spriral that just takes people down down down. Heroin users, use both Methadone and Xanax, which also this combination makes them OD.Posted by wenatcheegirl30 on Feb. 9 -

Preferrably, yes, but by giving up another right to approve or disapprove a tax that would support a building that you ALSO did not vote on. Bla Bla I agree with you Kathy, TTC was designed by out of town architects, built by out of town contractors for an out of town developer, as much as Wenatchee blathers about "building green" TTC is/was not, inside the patron creature features are more like a boys locker room than a $55 million entertainment facility, sight lines are poor, seating is uncomfortable, its cold, acoustics are bad, mechanical systems are inadequate, not enough parking and the building is a painted concrete box with some fake brick slapped on the corners for "scale" and besides that in my opinion the building should have cost about $8,000,000 less that it did - Wenatchee and it's citizens got taken.Posted by CArch on Feb. 9 -

M Walker, there's no doubt in my mind that you couldn't take the ball and run with it, but you realy wouldn't want the headaches. This facility could be a winner if they had the right marketing.Archery shoots,Sportsman shows.I'ts kind of like the "Welcome to Wenatchee " signs. You have people who can make poor decisions that cost the city money, and you have people who make wise decisions that make money. That new sign was a God send.Nice job.Posted by Rovingarcher on Feb. 9 -
Andrew Williams’s home state is catching up to his historic wedding
Romans 3:22-24 English Standard Version (ESV) "22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus," Of course I have Norm, but I don't deny that it is a sin and instead proudly proclaim my inclination toward that behavior. I humbly confess it and ask forgiveness. It's not about the "Gayness" it's about the PRIDE. If this were about drunkenness I could point out that it is sinful and most would agree. In the case of homosex I am thought to be hateful and bigoted for pointing out what the scriptures say about it. My scripture quote above does apply to all sin. It is wrong to do it and it is wrong to approve of those who practice it. "20 Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! 21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and shrewd in their own sight!" "As Courts Deliver Gay Marriage Victory, "Poster Couple" For Gays Rights Divorcing Tuesday's ruling was "bittersweet," said Robin Tyler, who filed for divorce in January" Where did they bury THIS headline? No black eyes today! "Though they know God's righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them." Thanks. That clarifies a lot. I'm up-county now, understood from what the World said that our community would not be directly responsible, so I didn't pay as much attention as I should.Posted by TheKit51 on Feb. 8 -
We know only that a teen is lost
Good Story. Such a tragic loss. Whether there was bullying or not, this should be a wake up call to anyone that teasing .... shoving, ... making fun of ... name calling.... are all hurtful. For some ... it makes them stronger....for others, the pain is so deep, it leads to suicide....Posted by sweetgrandma on Feb. 8 -
Walter "Dub" Simmons
Have you ever met someone that you know is special but you don't take the time to develop a friendship because you think you have plenty of time. Dub was that special individual that I wanted to get to know more but time and distance was my excuse for not making the effort. It is my loss as I have not met anyone that would so quickly stop what he was doing to help someone else. I shared some awesome whiskey and more importantly great music and friendship in the short time I new him. Dub is a man that will be sorely missed even by those that have never met him. Sue we are so sorry for your loss. Joel & CheriPosted by jak on Feb. 8 -

The Obama Administration is FORCING pro-abortion down the throats of Catholics, and other folks who believe in the separation of Church and State. I was looking for an article relating to that, but found NOTHING mentioned in the Wenatchee World in tonite's paper. There was, however front page coverage for gay marriage.Posted by wenworldnews on Feb. 8 -

It is ludicrous that Senator Parlette has proposed this bill. Talk about obvious… FYI, Ms. Parlette owns property adjacent to the arena. That is a matter of public record. The last time I checked, this was a democracy. Let the people voice their preference through a vote. I will not support an increase in sales tax to fund an arena that should never have been built.Posted by wilddogs on Feb. 8 -

The Senator and her husband own land near to the White Elephant Arena. Below is the text of a story from the local business journal which has now disappeared from its online archives where I first found it last November. Begin Quote: "WENATCHEE — If condos are out, Bob Parlette is looking for other ideas for the 4.5 acres of Wenatchee waterfront property he owns across from the Town Toyota Center. Randy Zielinski planned to build condominiums on the property and completed Riverwalk’s first phase before the economy took a nose dive in 2008. His plans for future phases on the neighboring properties, including Parlette’s, are now on hold. “I doubt anything is going to happen in 2010. Maybe 2011,” Zielinski said. “It all depends on financing, which is hard to get. We’re sitting here trying to figure out what is going to shake out in the market. Maybe something with commercial if that looks stronger. Right now, we’re licking our wounds.” That leaves Parlette looking at other options. “We need to get something going down there,” he said, especially now that Riverside Drive connecting Walla Walla Avenue to Worthen Street has been completed. Parlette’s property includes the 5,000-square-foot former Brett and Son building and the lot next to it at 1313 Walla Walla Ave. Both border Walla Walla Point Park. “It would be ideal for a hotel. We have some new hotels going in, but there’s still room for that, right across from the event center,” he said, or a food court or a recreation-related business, perhaps renting bicycles, canoes and kayaks, given its proximity to the park. Parlette isn’t the only property owner in the area looking at more open space than they expected as the city’s waterfront development plans took shape in 2004." End Quote.Posted by davebugg on Feb. 8 -

Bill would let financially ‘fragile’ Wenatchee tax without public vote
As one who was formerly active in a political party, I understand that not everybody can run for office. But we can hold our parties responsible when a debacle like this happens on their watch and try to change the direction of our communities. I hope that elected officials read and pay attention to blogs, but realitically, I doubt it. Certainly they haven't bothered to reply to any of my emails of late. I'd sure like to see someone opposing these guys come November.Posted by TheKit51 on Feb. 8 -

Bill would let financially ‘fragile’ Wenatchee tax without public vote
I spent ten years working on a volunteer committee to build a 1700 seat performing arts facility for a community whose size then is the same as the two county population now. I also sat on the Board of that facility for five years. It went through 4 votes, three rethinkings until we got the size and the funding and the benefit to the community worked out so that we won the vote to build, based on a 50-50% public-private funding, multi-purpose designed facility, and finally the last vote for the community to fund staffing in full, and subsidizing city sponsored touring shows by 50%. The architect was local, the construction workers were local and everybody in the community who were potential users or audience members had a voice in the design. The process the arena went through is a very non-democratic scam. No city government should stick it's people with a 53.1M USD expenditure without a vote of the people. Especially when surveys showed the people wouldn't support it, (per friends of mine), the potential audience in the normal 60 mi radius around it are too few to keep enough seats filled to pay for it. We have a giant ice rink that does not do much else well because the facility wasn't appropriately designed with much else in mind. The acoustics are awful, the sightlines worse. The floor seating is uncomfortable and the floor isn't raked so that one's view of a staged event is not blocked by the person in front of you. It's also darned cold in there every time we have gone. This venture appeared unsustainable to me from the beginning. What still staggers me is that anybody thinks that somehow, it can come up with more use and bail itself out. I am very doubtful that the arena can keep its doors open, and doubtful that anyone but Wenatchee is going to be willing to pay for it. They apparently drank the magic kool aid and believed in something that is simply unrealistic. It's too big for what can be booked and for the audience potential in a 60 mi radius, the normal for events booking, and too small for truly major bands or other events. I also find the intimations that the facility was foisted on unsuspecting communities by people who were really interested in padding their bottom line most disturbing. Somebody has a lot of 'splaining to do and the World should be pressing harder to get to the truth. That is, after all, their journalistic ethical obligation.Posted by TheKit51 on Feb. 8 -

Currently that recaptured sales tax revenue is going to pay bondholders, hence it is not breaking even. But yes you are correct if it's sold that revenue would stop and probably, depending on the deal, be paid back to the State.Posted by CArch on Feb. 8 -

I concur, being a resident of another community whose needs are great and whose resources are enormously restricted compared to Wenatchee. Please forgive my naivete, but what land does the Senator have which would be impacted? Was she not one of the advocates for the Town Toyota Center, which clearly is several quantum leaps beyond this area's ability to support? Are there others who pushed for this who also stood to benefit directly?Posted by TheKit51 on Feb. 8 -
Dog bites woman on Chelan sidewalk
Take a look at these sites: 1. http://bull911.com/pitbull-statistics.php 2. http://www.dogsbite.org/dog-bite-statistics.php 3. http://www.dog-obedience-training-online.com/dog-bite-statistics-by-breed.html 4. http://leerburg.com/pitbull.htm And there are many, many more...the first site is even a pit bull advocate site, but still sites the pit bull as one of the breeds most responsible for attacking people...working in the medical field I have seen all types of dog bite related injuries...a majority of them (and I mean about 19 out of 20) were pit bull related...I have seen injuries ranging from an old man who had to get over 300 stitches in his forearm for trying to ward off a pit bull attack to a 2 year old who had three of his fingers completely eaten by a pit bull that had been considered to be the family pet...all dogs can be dangerous, but the statistics are indicating that pit bulls are THE MOST dangerous and therefore MORE dangerous than any other breed...Posted by CowgirlJass on Feb. 8
