Shelby Gene Carey
Cashmere
Shelby Gene Carey, 64, retired
Wenatchee firefighter, entered into
rest on May 29, 2005, at Central
Washington Hospital following a
two-year battle with cancer. He lived
in the Wenatchee Valley and
Cashmere area for 60 years.
Shelby was born April 4, 1941, in
Sage, Arkansas to Edgar and
Thelma (Taylor) Carey. He was an
alumni of Eastmont High School,
Class of 1959. Shelby served in the
U.S. Army and Army Reserves from
1963 to 1969. After his discharge
from the Army, he worked at the
fruit warehouses in Wenatchee until he became a machinist for
the Boeing Co. In 1970, he became a fireman with the
Wenatchee Fire Department. Shelby made many strong and
lasting friendships with this special group of community
servants. On November 17, 1975, Shelby was united in
marriage with Carla (Clausen) Weaver and welcomed 3 young
children in addition to his young son. He welcomed these three
children with open arms and heart. He was extremely proud of
all four as he watched them grow, spread their wings and
become successful in their own fields. Due to health reasons, in
1982, he was forced to retire from the profession he loved
dearly. Even after his retirement, Shelby was always kept busy
at various jobs from parts man, delivery driver and truck driver.
He was a hard worker and made it a point to support his family
in every way possible. One of Shelby's passions was hot rod
cars. He was proud of his street rods and attending rod runs
throughout the state. His other passion was attending the drag
races with his buddy Gene Martin. As he slowed his pace a bit,
he found a new passion in his love for his home and rose
garden. His other activities included girl's softball coach, bowling
with a great team of guys, watching the kids play girls' softball,
Little League baseball, Little League football, H.S. football, etc.
In other words, whatever the kids were doing, Shelby was
cheering them on. He was a long time member of the
Wenatchee Valley Street Rods, Wenatchee Eagles and the
Cashmere American Legion. He enjoyed Saturday night bingo
and occasional trips to the casino.
Shelby is survived by his wife, Carla of the home; his
mother-in-law, Grace Clausen of Cashmere; sons, Mike Carey of
Auburn, WA, Mike Weaver (wife LauraLee) of East Wenatchee,
