Freda Mildred Henderson Terney, 87, passed away December 8, 2007, at Deaconess Hospital in Spokane with her husband, Ed Terney, son, Gary Henderson, granddaughter, Alyssa and a dear friend, Michael Swartsel, by her side. Her health had been steadily declining since suffering a massive stroke on December 7, 2005. Freda was born April 21, 1920, to Fred and Myrtle DeSellem in Toppenish, WA and her early years were in Wenatchee, where she and Vernon Henderson graduated from high school in 1938. She attended college at Ellensburg, WA and had one professor that taught her mother. Her studies were halted abruptly by WWII. As a young lady, she worked in the Kaiser Shipyard in Portland, as an electrician on baby flat top aircraft carriers. After the War, she returned to Wenatchee and became reacquainted with Vernon and they were married in 1946. They had three children, Marianne and twins, Raymond Larry and Robert Gary. She lived in Brewster for 40 some years, in a house on a bluff above the Columbia River, that she and Vern built in 1950. She had a life-long love of knitting, which she taught to many ladies in the area and peony raising that she learned from her father, the State Horticulturist in the 30's. She led Camp Fire Girls groups, both in Okanogan in the 40's and later, when her daughter was involved with them, in the 60's and Freda was always visibly supportive of Gary's sports interests that ranged from Little League baseball to starring in four sports each year in High School and then to college baseball. She was involved with Eastern Star and the Brewster Episcopal Church. Consecutively, she was also packing boss in several Brewster and Pateros apple packing sheds for 25 years. After Vern died suddenly, just a few months after his retirement after working 40+ years with the PUD, she still fulfilled their retirement plan of going to Arizona, even though she was now alone. There she met Ed Terney, ironically from Malott! Together, they built a classy motor home from a MCI bus from Ontario, bought in Colton, CA. They traveled extensively, visiting 30 states and eight providences of Canada. They spent eight weeks in Newfoundland, touring three archaeological digs. At a large site in Fairland, Newfoundland, she talked to the head archaeologist for over an hour, while Ed videotaped the site. In 1998, they flew to New Zealand and Australia, touring 19 days in New Zealand and 40 days in Australia. In 2000, they retired and built (when Ed was 72 and Freda was 80) their dream house in Malott and enjoyed living there, with a huge and abundant garden. She will be remembered as a busy person with a smile who was always supportive of her husbands and kids in all their endeavors. She was preceded in death by Raymond Larry, who died just a few days after birth; Vern; her parents; and three sisters. She is survived by her husband, Ed; daughter, Marianne of Lynnwood; and son, Gary of Spokane; grandchildren, Teresa, Travis, Jesse and Alyssa; and two great-grandchildren, Sabrina and Katrina. Public Visitation will be held Friday, December 14, 2007, from 4 to 6 p.m. Services will be held Saturday, December 15, 2007, at 1:00 p.m. at the Precht-Harrison-Nearents Chapel. Interment will be held at the Okanogan Valley Memorial Gardens. Reception to follow at the Elks Lodge at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society. Precht-Harrison-Nearents Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
