Surrounded by his loving family, Ralph W. "Bud" Hubbard, of Malott, peacefully passed away on Sunday, September 9, 2007, at Mid Valley Hospital, in Omak. Bud was born August 5, 1923, in Tonasket, WA to Ralph and Leila Hubbard and lived in Riverside until he joined the United States Navy at the age of 17. He served in the Armed Guard Division as a signalman and radioman. While in the service, he met Elizabeth "Betty" Rhodes, who was attending nurse's training in Seattle. They were married May 18, 1946, and set up their first home in Seattle, where Bud was employed by Greyhound Bus Lines. Bud and Betty moved back to the eastern side of the state in 1952, and in 1957, they bought their home in Malott, where they raised five children. To support his family, Bud worked for the County Road Department. After his retirement from the county, he began a second career working for Figenshow Trucking. Bud was a fabulous story teller and he left a treasure trove of oral history for his children and grandchildren. He had a wicked sense of humor and enjoyed a good joke, especially one at his own expense. Laughter was an oft-prescribed medicine in the Hubbard home, a tradition that has been passed down to subsequent generations and one that helped the family deal with the loss of Grandma Betty in 2004. Bud Hubbard was a devoted husband, a wonderful father and grandfather and an exceptional great-grandfather. He instilled in his children the importance of telling the truth, being honest, and showing respect. His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, have memories filled with star gazing, scooter rides, footstool diving competitions, tickle sessions, everything-with-peanutbutter and the comfort of belonging to a close knit, affectionate family. The greatest joy of Bud's life was his family. He and Betty were married for 58 years, a union that produced five children, 14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Bud was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty; and one precious great-granddaughter, Kaileigh Hubbard. He is survived by his children, Joan and Phil Davis of Lewiston, ID, Ronna and Bob Tollefson of Omak, WA, Gail and Lee Brand-Gwin of Mount Vernon, WA, Roy and Erica Hubbard of Point Roberts, WA and David and Teresa Hubbard of Malott, WA; his son-in-law, Jim Thompson of Lewiston, ID; his 14 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Orma Hagy of Okanogan, WA; and his extended family, Paul D. Rhodes of Wenatchee, WA, Harry and Kay Rhodes of Boise, ID and George and Joan Rhodes West of Poulsbo, WA. WB7TFM, signing off. At his request there will be no Service.
