Velma S. Brunton

Velma S. Brunton, 87, a well known resident of Leavenworth for the past 57 years, died Saturday afternoon, April 12, 2008, in Central Washington Hospital. She was born Velma Specker on March 31, 1921, to John E. and Margaret Hazel (Berry) Specker at Ree Heights, SD. When a sophomore in high school, the family moved to Wenatchee, where she completed her education, graduating from Wenatchee High School in 1939. Velma then attended Business College in Wenatchee and later worked as a bookkeeper for Hughes Brokerage in Yakima. While in Yakima, she met Philip R. Brunton and they were married on February 2, 1950, at Ellensburg. In 1951, they moved to Leavenworth, where they made their home and Phil worked on the family fruit orchard. Velma later was employed by the Great Northern Railroad as a bookkeeper in Wenatchee. In December of 1954, they adopted their son, John, who was three and a half, and Shirley, who was four and a half, into their home. She was a member of the Leavenworth Community United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years; Chumstick Grange #819 and the Leavenworth Senior Citizen Center and was a former member of the Tamarack Jr. Women's Club, who was instrumental in promoting the Bavarian Theme. She also was a 4-H Club Leader for several years. Velma was an accomplished seamstress and she loved knitting and crocheting. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and one who loved family reunions and get-togethers. Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Philip of the family home; son and daughter-in-law, John and Dodie Brunton of Portland; two granddaughters, Erin Brunton and Allison Brunton, both of Portland; two sisters, Dorothy Black of Cashmere and Della Peterson of Yakima; and one brother, Marvin Specker of Wenatchee. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Shirley, on May 14, 2001; and two brothers, Dwight and Lloyd Specker. A Memorial Service of Commemoration for Velma S. Brunton will be held at 4:00 o'clock Thursday afternoon, April 17, 2008, in the Leavenworth Community United Methodist Church with Pastor Roger Hudson, officiating. Those who wish, may make a memorial in her name, to the Leavenworth Community United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 418 Evans St.; or the Leavenworth Senior Citizen Center, P.O. Box 1033, Leavenworth, WA 98826. Inurnment will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park, East Wenatchee, WA, at a later date. Ward's Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth, is in charge of the arrangements.
