Dwight "Swede" Tugaw
Monday, June 16, 2008
Dwight "Swede" Tugaw, 76, of Okanogan, died peacefully at his home Thursday June 12, 2008, surrounded by his family. Swede, along with twin brother, Frenchie were born in Riverside, WA on March 16, 1932, to Thomas and Coral Tugaw. Swede attended Riverside school until starting his ranching career. Swede married Abbie L. Wilson on September 26, 1951, at the home of Abbie's parents in East Omak. Swede worked on the Bob French Ranch at Scotch Creek for two years when Bob was Washington State Senator. He then worked for several years for Dr. T.J. McCain, both working with pure bred cattle. In the early 1960's, Abbie and Swede bought the Eastwood place in the Limebelt, where they raised cattle. Swede also worked at the Western Propane Company and the Livestock Market in Okanogan. Later, he started full time ranching. Swede retired in 1995, and sold the Eastwood place and all the cattle, to Joe and Debbie Philleo. In his younger years, Swede enjoyed competing in local calf roping events. He enjoyed camping at Rock Creek with his family and close friends and taking drives in the mountains with Abbie. You could always find Swede at one of the neighbors on Johnson Creek, helping with branding or moving cattle to the range. Swede is survived by his wife of 56 years, Abbie; their son, Tom and wife, Peggy Tugaw; a son-in-law, Tom Parten; grandchildren, Tim and Anya Tugaw, Lea and Justin Workman and Lyn and Budd Featherly; great-grandchildren, T.J., Kayden and Maggie Tugaw and Emma and Carter Workman. Also surviving are his siblings, Cecil Tugaw and Evelyn Frazier; and special friend, Ed Root. He was preceded in death by both parents; twin brother, Frenchie; and daughter, Laura. Memorial Services will be held Tuesday, June 17, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at the Precht-Harrison-Nearents Chapel with Graveside Services to follow at the Riverside Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Okanogan Regional Home Health and Hospice, American Cancer Society or the Okanogan County Museum. Precht-Harrison-Nearents Chapel is entrusted with the arrangements.
