Henry F. "Hank" Harvey, 89, a 60 year resident of Chelan and retired businessman, died Monday, March 17, 2008, at Lake Chelan Community Hospital. He was born May 2, 1918, at Bluefield, VA, the son of Henry Joseph and Nancy (Abshire) Harvey. He attended schools at Bluefield and graduated from Bluefield High School in 1938. Following graduation, he then attended college for two years. For two years, he resided in Canada, where he received his pilot's license and then joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940. When World War II began, he returned to the U.S. and began service with the Army Air Corps at Victorville, CA. Henry was then transferred to Long Beach, CA. It was here he met Bernice Schmitten, whom he was later married to on November 21, 1943, at Reno, NV. After service at Long Beach, he was transferred to Homestead AFB in Florida and later to Reno, NV, in 1943. Until his discharge in 1946, he was stationed in India. Following his discharge, they resided briefly at Bluefield, VA, before moving to Lake Chelan. Henry planted an orchard and purchased Lake Chelan Airways. In 1954, he sold Lake Chelan Airways to Ernie Gibson and Don McKenzie. He and his wife started Harvey's Furniture, which they operated until 1991. During this time, Henry was an avid golfer, fisherman and hunter -- enjoying numerous trips with his three sons throughout Washington State. They especially enjoyed the Stehekin Valley for hunting and the waters of Destination Sound for fishing. Grandpa Harvey enjoyed the companionship and company of his grandchildren -- whether watching them in their various sport activities or sitting at the lake, visiting with them and sharing stories of his life, as well as theirs. He was a longtime member and past president of the Lake Chelan Golf Club and very instrumental in getting the present Chelan Municipal Golf Course established. During his time of golfing, he was honored with nine holes-in-one. He was a member of the Chelan Lions Club, Chelan Eagles #2218 and the National Rifle Association. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice, in 1993; as well as his parents; six brothers; and seven sisters. Survivors include his sons, Doug (Vicki) Harvey of Snohomish, Dr. Steve (Sheri) Harvey of East Wenatchee, Curt (Jill) Harvey of Wenatchee and Billy Harvey of Spokane; his daughters, Marcile (Bill) Nickell of Chelan and Sheri Baldwin of Wenatchee; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. His knowledge and the ability to share and teach those whom he loved, will be truly missed. We love you, Dad, Grandpa, uncle and friend. A Tribute Service will take place on Saturday, March 22, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at North Shore Bible Church in Manson, with Pastor Frank Needles officiating. Private Interment will be at Fraternal Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, March 20, 2008, from 1 to 8 p.m. and on Friday, March 21, 2008, from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to Lake Chelan Valley Scholarship Fund, Box 1005, Chelan, WA 98816; the American Cancer Society; or Harvey Memorial Cemetery, c/o Tom Richardson, 305 Ridgeway Drive, Bluefield, VA 24605. Services are under direction of Precht Rose Chapel, Chelan.
