Tuesday, September 9, 2008
Jean Phillips passed into the presence of Jesus September 4, 2008, at 6:30 p.m. She was born Jeanette "Jean" Beatrice Sharpe on August 25, 1915, to Ray and Claribel Sharpe at their home on Mission Street in Wenatchee, WA. Her father found employment with the railroad and moved his family of five to Leavenworth, WA, where they lived on his parent's ranch in the Eagle Creek Valley. In 1922, Ray was transferred to the Wenatchee Railroad terminal and raised his family of six children in a home at 833 Cascade Street. Jean attended Stevens, Lincoln, HB Ellison Junior High, and graduated from Wenatchee High in 1935. In her teens, she baby sat, picked and packed fruit to help her family. Her aunt, Olive Amos, walked all her nieces and nephews to the Baptist church on the corner of Chelan and First. As a teen, Jean attended The CMA Church on the corner of Chelan and Kittitas. It was there, at the age of 17, that she accepted Jesus into her heart and began her Christian committed life. She was employed as a Telephone Operator after high school. She married Ralph Arza Gratreaks June 25, 1937. They lived in Okanogan, where Victor Ralph was born April 9, 1938. They moved to Omak, where Iris Ruth was born April 23, 1939. Times were difficult in the job market for Ralph, so Jean packed apples each fall. In 1939, she decided to return to Wenatchee and live with her mom, aunts and uncles, who helped take care of Vic and Iris. Her sister, Iris, provided the tuition for her to attend Business College during the day and she worked as a waitress in the evenings. She walked everywhere. She worked one session for the Legislation in Olympia and for the Chelan County Transportation Department. In 1944, she was employed by the Fruit Growers Service in Monitor. She was Editor and Chief of the company newsletter. She was given the task of surveying the area orchards. In a company car, with poor brakes, she learned to drive on the Monitor back roads. When she bought her model A Ford, she learned that a driver doesn't have to pump brakes to stop. Jean, Vic and Iris loved the nice folks in Monitor and attended the Community Methodist Church. Jean married Harry Phillips on June 4, 1946, at Ohme Gardens. They bought a 15 acre ranch on Strutzel Road in Monitor, drilled a well, built a house and planted trees. Harry had a successful 25 year career in the Navy, while Jean worked as a bookkeeper and managed their fruit orchard. In September of 1949, Jean, Vic and Iris traveled on the USS Mitchell to Guam, where Harry was stationed after World War II. It was there that Jean became interested in photography, when she worked for the Naval Base Welfare and Recreation Department. They returned from their wonderful adventure in November of 1951. Jean setup a portrait studio on the Monitor ranch and was a professional photographer till her retirement in 1974. She earned many degrees from photography courses, won many blue ribbons and honors at the photography shows and one year, was the Best of Show winner at the Wenatchee Art Show. Jean was the originator of outdoor portraiture in her locality and taught a class at the Wenatchee Valley Jr. College. While living in the well organized community of Monitor, she served as a Cub Scout Den Mother, PTA Hot Lunch Chairman, Room Mother, Sunday School Teacher, Child Evangelism Teacher, PTA President, Ladies' Hospital Guild Secretary and Methodist Church Youth Director. She returned to the Wenatchee CMA Church, where she served as Sunday School Teacher, Bible School Teacher, Deaconess, Ladies' Missionary Society President, arranged flowers for the altar from her garden, sang in the choir and served on many committees. Ann was born May 15, 1956. Harry passed away from a fishing accident in March 1973. Jean sold the ranch, built her dream house in Sunnyslope and spent many hours hauling rocks and landscaping a lovely terraced garden. In 1976, she married Fred Bomersine in that same garden that had a panoramic view of the beautiful Wenatchee Valley. They attended the Peace Lutheran Church, where she served on various committees and organized a Missionary Convention. They were Co-Presidents of the Railroad Retirement Club and Jean served as the Wenatchee Symphony Reception Coordinator. Fred passed away in 1990. Jean continued to be active as a member of the Wenatchee Valley Museum, Christian Writers Club, and Steelhead Club. In her 70's, Jean became a nanny for the Dr. Peter Valaas family, continued to keep her garden beautifully groomed, taught Sunday School at the Nazarene Church, organized family reunions and traveled. She researched and wrote an article for the Museum Newsletter on the Amos family. Her mother, Claribel Amos, was raised in the Dryden area. In her 80's, Jean researched her roots and wrote a book about the Sharpe family that lived in Leavenworth entitled, "Treasured Memories Of This Place". She loved camping and was still hiking at 83. She loved the Lord and took every opportunity to have Missionaries in her home. She enjoyed entertaining with home cooked meals. She baked hand ground grain bread and sold it at the Farmer's Market. Her popular specialty was Zeke bread. The recipe came from the Bible's Old Testament scripture, Ezekiel 4:9. She was skilled at tatting, crocheting, knitting, sewing, drawing, writing poetry, tying fishing flies and playing the ukulele. She spent many summers taking her grandsons fishing. She encouraged education and traveled many miles to attend graduations. She lived the largest portion of her life in the Wenatchee Valley. She was a true servant of the Lord and will be missed by her friends and surviving family: son, Vic Phillips and wife, Eloise of Walla Walla; daughter, Iris Bolstad and husband, Don of Wenatchee; daughter, Ann Barnard of Sacramento, CA. She has six grandsons and eight great-grandchildren. A Celebration of her Life will be held Saturday, September 20, 2008, at 10:45 a.m. at the Wenatchee Free Methodist Church, 1601 Fifth Street, Wenatchee, with a luncheon following. Dr. Jon Sharpe (Jean's nephew) officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to the charity or Sunday School of your choice.
