Estel Lenora McKay Taylor, age 88, of Wenatchee, WA, beloved teacher, passed away peacefully at home, holding her husband's hand, on August 4, 2009. She was born on May 3, 1921, in Prairie Dog Township, KS. Her parents were Vera and Clyde McKay. She attended the same one room schoolhouse that her father and his siblings attended. Estel, the oldest of four children, moved with her family to Okanogan, WA, where she graduated from Okanogan High School in 1940. Estel attended Whitworth College from 1941 to 1942, and she graduated from EWSC Cheney in 1944, with a provisional teaching degree. She taught second grade in Omak for two years, September 1944 through May 1946. Estel married James Donald Taylor in November of 1945, after he returned from the Pacific Theater of World War II. From the fall of 1946 through the spring of 1949, Estel taught second grade in Pullman, WA, while her husband finished his BS degree in Horticulture. Estel and Jim moved to the Wenatchee area in the fall of 1949, and she taught at the Monitor Grade School. After having two children, she returned to teaching, first at Eastmont and then fifth grade at Washington Elementary School. She retired from teaching after 30 years. Estel was a member of DAR, Topaz Club, Delta Kappa Gamma and Washington State Retired Teachers. Estel was the first woman to join the Wenatchee District Kiwanis Clubs and was a member of the Wenatchee club with perfect attendance for 21 years. She received the George F. Hixson Award for distinguished service. Estel followed the Lord in believer's baptism at the age of 14, in the North Fork of Prairie Dog Creek in Kansas. She loved the Lord and He used her to teach many hundreds of students. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her. She was a member of the Wenatchee Brethren Baptist Church. Estel is survived by her husband of 63 years, Jim Taylor; one daughter, Camille Leidigh of Yaak, MT; one son, Ted of Wenatchee; two sisters, Billie Rappé of Lacey, WA and Nancy Lou Gilbaugh of East Wenatchee; five grandchildren, Aven Leidigh and Cedar Leidigh, both of Anchorage, AK, Azure Leidigh McCormick of Olympia, WA, Cassia Leidigh of Greenville, SC and Cherith Leidigh of Yaak, MT; and one great-grandson, Elliott McCormick. The family would like to thank the Knights of Columbus and Dr. Eichler for his compassionate care. Internment took place on Friday, August 7, 2009, at the Wenatchee Cemetery. A public Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, August 12, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at the Wenatchee Brethren Baptist Church, on the corner of Okanogan and Peachy Streets, with Sam Detwiler and John Braun officiating.
