Friends set up card, donation box
This story previously did not state that an address was required on dropoffs. The error has been corrected in this version.
EAST WENATCHEE — Friends of Jennifer Curtin, 14, have set up a box where friends and others can send cards, gifts and donations.
Curtin was hit by a car Wednesday in East Wenatchee.
Cyndi MacKenzie said the UPS Store in the East Wenatchee mall donated a box where people can leave items. She has arranged for friends and relatives to take them to Curtin and her parents in Seattle two or three times a week.
MacKenzie said new banking rules prevent her from easily setting up a bank account to donate funds to offset expenses while Curtin is at Harborview, but people can contribute directly to the family through the UPS box.
Items can be dropped off at the UPS Store, or mailed to Glen “Skip” and Becky Curtin, or Jennifer Curtin, 331 Valley Mall Parkway, Box 123, East Wenatchee, WA 98802-4829. Items dropped at the UPS Store must be in an envelope or box and include the address.
Safeway in East Wenatchee has also put out jars that are gathering “Pennies for Jenny.”
Anyone with questions can contact MacKenzie at 884-3077.
SEATTLE — Jennifer Curtin, 14-year-old the East Wenatchee girl who was hit by a car Wednesday, is now responsive and breathing on her own.
Her father, Skip Curtin, said Monday that his daughter was taken off a ventilator in the morning. She is still in stable but critical condition in intensive care at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where she was flown after doctors discovered a buildup of blood next to her skull soon after the accident.
“It’s been a really good day, so far,” he said in a telephone interview.
“She’s actually mouthed her name a couple of times,” Curtin said. “The neuro (neurology) team, everyone who’s been in has been really positive. We’re all excited,” he added.
Curtin was with three or four other teenagers who were trying to cross Grant Road at about 6:15 p.m. when she was struck by a car driven by a 75-year-old Wenatchee man, East Wenatchee Police reported. The man’s view of the youngsters crossing was obscured by a car in front of him, which had stopped for the teens, police said.
Curtin added that, despite the good news, “She’s got a long ways to go. This is a marathon, not a sprint.”
He said his daughter does appear to understand what’s going on.
“She’s kind of acknowledging that we’re there now. She looked at me when they asked her to find her dad,” he said.
The family expects her to remain in intensive care for at least a few weeks.

And people. . . this is a perfect example of why you should NEVER stop in the middle of a block to allow pedestrians to cross the street. I've seen numerous times when someone's life has been endangered by this stupid practice!

The last time I drove down Grant road I didn't remember seeing many crosswalks. Specificially, between Eastmont and Kentucky.

Im so glad to hear our little jenn is doing better, we got the call in class yesterday regarding her breathhing on her own , im so happy , but honestly this was something to tell you about her improvment, the city is neglecting the fact that a crosswalk should be put in where this accident occured, that is a veryyy and i mean veryy used spot on grant road where all the high school students cross, i know this because i am one. walking all the way down to safe way or up to tonys market to cross takes you a long way off track , i know many familys who have asked for it , Jennifer all of your friends love and miss you and we all wish we could be with you right now, gett better and pull through this,

There is a lot of good energy behind all of your comments although I do not live in Wenatchee, I would like to offer you all a healthy challenge along the lines of civic engagement - You have what it takes to get a crosswalk in your town, grassroots, mobolize, never underestimate your potential as students, parents, etc...build a living memorial in honor of a girl who just ignited a fire, a catalyst for change, do not wait for city hall, a politician, a DOT, You are all great people and together YOU CAN DO IT. G-d Bless Jennifer.
And someday the crosswalk will be
there because you have friends who cared enough to get involved :)

The Wenatchee World printed that people can drop off items at the UPS store which is incorrect. All boxes, mail, and money donations have to be in an addressed envelope, etc. and has to have the Curtins name and the full address: Jennifer Curtin or Glen (Skip) and Becky Curtin, 331 Valley Mall Pkwy # 123, East Wenatchee, WA 98802-4829 and if it isn't stamped, the UPS store will put it directly into their box. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at 884-3077. Thank you!
