Colleen Rae Horan was born September 30, 1929, in Wenatchee, WA, to John and Helen Horan. She went to be with the Lord March 25, 2009. Colleen attended Sunnyslope Schools through the ninth grade, then graduated from Wenatchee High School in 1948. She graduated from Washington State University in 1952, with a degree in education. While attending WSU, she was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority. Shortly after graduating, she married the love of her life, Robert J. Hein on September 14, 1952. Colleen was very active in both the community and the Highland School System. She taught K-4 at Marcus Whitman Elementary in Cowiche, WA for 30 years. Colleen was devoted to the children she taught, and never forgot her former students' names. She was active in numerous civic organizations, including Women's Century Club, P.E.O., DAR, Sigma Kappa Alumni and Highland United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school. She was a lifelong member of the Republican Party. Colleens interests included bird watching, bug hunting and traveling with her husband, Bob.She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Robert J. Hein of Yakima; her daughter, Helen Gundersen of Westport, WA; son, John "Jack" Hein of Tieton; her sister and best friend, Meg Names (Tom Names) of Tacoma; sister-in-law, Janet Anderson of Seattle; her grandchildren, Christopher Gundersen, Kelsey Gundersen, Jayme LaHue, Rachel LaHue, Jessica Chartrand, Jake Chartrand and John Hein; Julie Nilburn, mother of John Hein; the Joy Sanders family of Tieton; and nine nieces and nephews. Colleen was preceded in death by her parents, John and Helen Horan; and her sisters, Jackie McDougall of Wenatchee and Pat Wallin of Chelan.A Funeral Service was held Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at the Yakima Evangelical Church. Concluding Service and Burial followed at West Hills Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to either the WSU Alumni Association or the Alzheimer's Foundation c/o Keith & Keith. Keith & Keith Funeral Home, in Yakima, WA, is entrusted with arrangements.
