State picture coming into view for soccer, volleyball teams

With the first weekend of postseason play in the books for most North Central Washington prep teams, the playoff picture is becoming clearer in girls soccer and volleyball.

Here’s what the schedule looks like this week for the teams still alive:

Girls soccer

Class 1A

Brewster and Cascade each won their Caribou Trail League district tournament first-round contests, setting up meetings with top-seeded Cashmere and No. 2 Okanogan, both of which had first-round byes. Brewster travels to Cashmere and Okanogan hosts Cascade in semifinal play at 3 p.m. today. The winners will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Apple Bowl for the district championship, while the losers will meet in an elimination game at 4 p.m. Thursday, also in Wenatchee. The loser of the district title match and the winner of the elimination game will face off at a time to be determined Saturday at the Apple Bowl for the second and final berth from the district to the state tourney.

Class 2A

Ephrata upset Othello 1-0 on Saturday in the first round of the Central Washington Athletic Conference district tournament, setting up a semifinal match with East Valley at 4 p.m. today in Yakima. East Valley is the top seed from the CWAC South, while Ephrata is the fourth seed from the CWAC North. The winner of the match will move on to Saturday’s title match, while the loser will play the loser of the other semifinal match between Selah and Ellensburg at 4 p.m. Thursday in loser-out play. The victor of that contest will play another elimination match at 1 p.m. Saturday, with the winner taking the third and final seed to state.

Class 2B/1B

By shutting out Bridgeport 3-0 Saturday, Liberty Bell locked up its second state berth in a row. The Mountain Lions will meet defending state champion LaSalle in the district championship match at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Apple Bowl to determine the two seeds to state.

Volleyball

Class 4A

Wenatchee takes the fifth seed from the Columbia Basin Big Nine district tournament into the regional tournament on Friday and Saturday in Spokane. The Panthers open play at 7 p.m. Friday against Richland, and the rest of the double-elimination tournament will be played Saturday. If the Panthers win Friday, they will have to win two out of three matches to clinch a state berth. If they lose Friday, they will have to win two matches in a row to make state.

Class 2A

Ephrata will try to squeak its way into the district tournament in a play-in match against Prosser at 6 p.m. today.

Class 1A

Okanogan will host a six-team tournament Saturday, beginning with loser-out contests between Okanogan-Lake Roosevelt and Brewster-Cashmere at 10 a.m. The winners will advance to play Chelan and Cascade in the semifinals at noon, and the victors of those contests will play immediately after for the district title. The losers of the semifinal matches will play in a loser-out match at the same time, with the winner playing the loser of the district championship for the second and final seed to state.

Class 2B

Top-seed Kittitas plays No. 4 Waterville and No. 2 Liberty Bell meets No. 3 Bridgeport at 6:30 p.m. today at Entiat in the first round of district play. The winners will play at 10 a.m. Saturday in Entiat for the district title, while the losers will meet at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in an elimination match. The winner of that match will then play the loser of the district championship for the second and final state berth.

Class 1B

Fourth-seeded Pateros takes on No. 1 Wilson Creek at 4 p.m. today in the first round of districts in Entiat. The winner will advance to the district title match at 10 a.m. Saturday, and the loser will play the loser of today’s Thorp-Moses Lake Christian match in an elimination match at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. The winner of that match will take on the loser of the district championshop for the second and last berth to state.
