Taser short-circuits E. Wenatchee chase
Tuesday, November 3, 2009
EAST WENATCHEE — A 44-year-old East Wenatchee man is in custody this morning after causing three accidents and leading Douglas County sheriff’s deputies on a high-speed chase through East Wenatchee Monday night.
The suspect was eventually hit with a Taser to end the pursuit, said Harvey Gjesdal, Douglas County sheriff.
At 8:10 p.m., a Douglas County sheriff’s deputy, filling up his vehicle with gas in the 200 block of Grant Road, saw a van leaving the scene of an accident at the intersection of Highway 28 and Grant Road, Gjesdal said. The deputy pursued the van up Grant Road to Eastmont Avenue, where it struck a second vehicle, then continued at speeds between 40 and 60 mph up Eastmont Avenue, with deputies in pursuit.
The van ran a stop sign at Northeast Fifth Street, then, in the 1100 block of Eastmont, struck a third vehicle, said Sgt. William Redfield with the East Wenatchee Police Department.
At Eastmont and 19th Street, the van failed to negotiate a turn and landed in a ditch.
However, with two deputies ordering him out of the vehicle, the driver continued to try to get the van out of the ditch.
At that point one of the deputies used a Taser on him and he was taken into custody, Redfield said.
The van driver was examined at Central Washington Hospital for minor injuries, Redfield said, then was booked into the Chelan County Regional Justice Center on suspicion of vehicular assault, eluding an officer, hit-and-run driving, drunken driving and driving while license suspended.
Redfield said the only other driver who needed medical attention was the driver involved in the first collision, at Highway 28 and Grant Road.
He said he does not have that driver’s name but said the driver complained of pain to his left side and was transported by ambulance to Central Washington Hospital.

Uh oh... EWPD used a non-lethal weapon to take down a dangerous subject who was an obvious risk to society... Now let the critical statements fly! Here we go....

LOL, Jerry. I'm sure, somehow, it was the deputies' faults, and the driver was just misunderstood...

Yeah, Thank goodness the suspect wasn't seriously injured by that horrible taser!! The paramedics might have had to use their EXTRA LARGE band-aid on him! Then JANE DOE would be all upset! Let's keep an "open mind" though, I'm sure the driver had a good reason to slam his vehicle into others, right?

Lol! Oh...at least people have been pretty humorous with this one :) I just sincerely hope officer Marshall wasn't involved in this one or you will never hear the end of it. It should be interesting to see what the source of this incident was. Drugs/Alcohol/Mental issues etc. Its not every day that someone does something this dramatic. But its refeshing to at least see people taking it lightly :)

Oh Cactus...I haven't taken much said here seriously or personally. I hope no one else has done that either. We all have the right to our opinions. In reading the article I noted that it was the Douglas County Sheriff's, not the East Wenatchee Police, that did the tazing and they don't seem to use their tazers sooo abundantly. I don't oppose the use of tazers, I just think that some officers aren't applying it in the right setting. But it sounds like this was the right setting for using it.

Officer Marshall may be overzealous and in several incidents recently, but at least he's out doing his job and not drinking coffee in some doughnut shop. I rather have an officer out working than one that runs away from everything.

Perhaps Douglas County Sheriffs Office could be more productive working the county rather than sticking their nose into the City of East Wenatchee all the time
