Turkey, dressing and all the fixings — even a pumpkin pie for dessert — are on the menu this year when Serve Wenatchee Valley distributes hundreds of Thanksgiving baskets to area families.

Sign-up for Baskets of Blessings, now in its fifth year, begins Nov. 10 and runs for two weeks. Registration should be done in person from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Serve Wenatchee Valley’s office at 212 S. Mission St., Wenatchee. Evening registration will also be held from 5 to 7 on Nov. 12.

A photo ID and piece of mail as proof of address are required.

“We know the economy is slumping, so we’re ratcheting up this year to handle more requests,” said Bob Shepard, executive director of Serve Wenatchee Valley, a valleywide umbrella group for nearly 60 churches and ministries. “But at the same time, the number of (basket) sponsors may be decreasing.”

Sponsorships cost $30 for each basket, he said. In the past, more than 375 baskets have been sponsored by local individuals, businesses and churches.

The program is designed for families of three or more people, Shepard said. Baskets feed up to six people. Individuals and couples asking to register will likely be referred to other Thanksgiving meal programs in the area.

Families should try to sign up early, Shepard added, because the limited number of baskets could be claimed quickly.

Basket distribution is scheduled for Nov. 24, two days before Thanksgiving.
