Chelan upsets defending state champ Cashmere

CASHMERE — With Cashmere and Chelan meeting in the district playoffs, it was a given that at least one CTL team was going to make it through to the state tournament. Few people expected Chelan to be that team.

But the Goats pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the year, beating the defending state champion Bulldogs 21-14 and punching their ticket to the state tournament.

“Chelan out-played us,” Cashmere coach Phil Zukowski said. “They were bigger, faster and stronger tonight.”

The same two teams met last week to close out the regular season, and in that game the Bulldogs were able to capitalize on Chelan’s mistakes. This week, Cashmere failed to capitalize on early opportunities.

“The biggest difference was that we had two scoring opportunities early and came up blank,” Zukowski said.

Instead it was Chelan grabbing the early lead on a trick play. Michael Amsel threw to Aaron McQuaid, who pitched the ball to Robin Weathersby, who took it the rest of the way for a 63-yard score.

Cashmere tied it on a 4-yard run by Tyler McNair in the second quarter, and took the lead on an 80-yard run by Ben Allen in the third period, but Amsel threw a pair of second-half touchdown passes to McQuaid, a 7-yarder in the third quarter and a 3-yarder in the fourth, to give Chelan the stunning victory.

“Amsel did a great job with their offense,” Zukowski said. “We’d have them third and 12 and he’d throw a big pass or (make) a great run.”

Amsel finished 11 for 25 for 243 yards and two touchdowns, and McQuaid had five catches for 125 yards.

“The kids are ecstatic,” Chelan coach Darren Talley said. “These kids have gone through so much, they just don’t know any better. They just like to play football.”

The Goats qualified for the state tournament for just the third time in school history, and will host a state playoff game for the first time in the school’s history next weekend.

Talley said Cashmere was a class act in defeat.

“Their kids were going by saying how we were a great team and how we were going to represent well, and coach Zukowski came right over and congratulated me,” Talley said. “What a classy outfit.”

I think Cashmere's AD is the elgibility guru. He might want to check out the status of the young Chelan QB, who started late as a transfer from some school on the other side. I hear the move was for basketball but he's an all around athelete. Half of his family (parent and sibling) remains over on the rainy side with no divorce in the picture.

A mighty Cashmere "Win First - Develop Good Sportsmanship Second” parent sounds unglued by the fact that a 9th grade QB and his team beat them on their home field? I have only lived in the area for 2 years, but I am shocked at Cashmere's bad reputation. Sportsnut101 should drop the "sports" from his username and get over the fact that his progeny, (that means your offspring sportsnut101 Jr.) is not going to state. If you only knew what the Chelan players have been dealing with as young "MEN" this week, you would stop acting like a sore CHILD and be happy for them. Also, review the game film and count the late hits by your fine team, one resulting in a Chelan player being hospitalized! Finally, the 9th grade QB's family life is none of your poor sport business! He lives in Chelan and is eligible to go to any school he wishes. Maybe you need more schooling on parenting and education rules?

Amsel Jr. is my nephew and my brother wanted to get his son out of the big city into the more laidback life of the country, the reason why we all live here. Too bad when someone moves into town you think there is some scam going on. Just wait till basketball and baseball, he will excel in that area as well as in the schoolroom. All I can say to sportsnut101, YOU ARE A POOR LOSER, SEE YA AT STATE!!!!!

Was looking forward to seeing the bulldogs in the playoffs again and liked their chances...but am totally impressed with Chelan's young QB.
Also, I'm hoping the Chelan player who was injured is OK....haven't heard anything.

i say congrats goats. and im from the same league. but i must agree with the man that says his eligability is questionable. cause it is a pretty big coinsedence that a stud QB shows up the week after thier old one got hurt. i say no way. its to convenient. but no one player can decide the outcome of a game. so i say congrats goats. but next time you recruit make it less obvious

toolie (rata toolie) says...

yeah it maybe a coinsedence to you two who say that his elgability needs to be checked out. But he has been planning on coming to chelan for a while now. before evan reisters injury. and he didnt even play the position of quarterback. so i say congradualtions for exceeding this far into state already chelan. you have fought hard. and out played cashmere and royal. the fan who think otherwise are just jelous.
