Mingo gets game-winner in Wild debut
Saturday, November 7, 2009
WENATCHEE — Welcome to Wenatchee, Dajon Mingo.
Mingo was acquired in a trade with the Kenai River Brown Bears earlier this week and wasted little time in making an impact with his new team, scoring the game-winning goal Friday night.
The Wild beat the Texas Tornado 6-4.
The game was tied 4-4 as the clock ticked under two minutes, but Mingo quickly changed that, beating Tornado goalie Dan Sullivan to put Wenatchee back in front. Duncan McKellar added an empty-net goal at 19:46 to close things out.
The teams combined for 122 minutes in penalties, and the Wild peppered Sullivan with 56 shots in the first-ever meeting between the teams.
Brandon Jaeger made 22 saves to record the win and improve to 9-0 on the season, despite giving up the fastest goal in team history.
Texas took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Rock Einersen just five seconds into the game, but Wenatchee scored the next three goals — two of them on the power play — and lead 3-1 after one.
The Tornado scored the only two goals of the second period, but McKellar’s first goal of the game put the Wild back in front at 1:06 of the third period.
McKellar had a four-point night for Wenatchee with two goals and two assists, and Brandon Burrell and Armand de Swardt added three assists each.
The Wild and Tornado wrap up their two-game series tonight at Town Toyota Center.
Notes: To acquire Mingo, the Wild sent forward Jesse Ramsey to the Brown Bears. ... Paid attendance Friday was 2,798. The Wild are leading the league in attendance for the second straight season, with an average of 3,033, which is nearly triple the league’s average.
