WENATCHEE — For the second time in as many nights, a player new to Wenatchee played a key role in a Wild victory.

James Adamo, added to the roster due to an injury to goaltender Mac Carruth, stopped 24 shots in his Wild debut, and the Wild won 3-1 to complete a two-game sweep of the Texas Tornado.

“Mac was injured yesterday and we wanted to make sure we had a backup,” Wild head coach Paul Baxter said. “(Adamo) drove nine hours, so the least we could do is play him.”

Adamo started the season in Janesville, but after being cut by the Jets returned home to Butte, Mont., to play for the Tier III Roughriders.

“My son raves about him all the time and I saw him play on B2 the other night,” Baxter said. “He stopped 66 out of 67 shots and 15 straight in the shootout.”

Adamo said he’d faced as many as 104 shots in a game for the Roughriders.

“It’s nice to play for a team where they have a defense,” Adamo said.

Adamo said he knew he’d be suiting up for Saturday’s game, but had no idea he’d be starting.

“I think he was a little nervous,” Baxter said. “There was a big crowd tonight.”

That crowd was treated to another hard-hitting game, with the Wild and Tornado combining for 159 minutes in penalties. Wenatchee had 15 power play opportunities, and converted on three of them to account for all of the team’s goals on the night.

Shawn Pauly broke a scoreless deadlock at 11:39 of the second period, scoring on assists from Duncan McKellar and Dajon Mingo as the Wild capitalized on a five-on-three advantage.

Just over two minutes later the Wild were back on the power play, and Christian Hilbrich converted. The 6-foot-6 forward used his large wingspan to score a wraparound goal. At 13:53 of the second period.

The Tornado closed the gap to 2-1 before the end of the period, but Texas continued to have trouble staying out of the penalty box in the third period, and the Wild eventually made them pay, again, at 6:57 of the period.

Nathan Sliwinski scored on assists from McKellar and Michael Di Puma.

The Wild played most of the game with just five defensemen after Kyle Brodie got involved in an altercation with former Wild teammate Tyler Sybil. Brodie and Sybil were both ejected less than eight minutes into the game.

The Wild lost another defenseman midway through the third period when Brandon Burrell went down with a shoulder injury. Burrell was taken to a local hospital, but the extent of his injury was not known at press time. Defenseman Chris Rumble was ejected as a result of the same altercation in which Burrell was injured, leaving the Wild down three defensemen for the final 8:45.

In all, four players — two from each team — and Texas coach Tony Curtale were sent to the locker rooms early.

The Wild have next weekend off before heading to Alaska for games against Kenai River on Tuesday and Wednesday and the Alaska Avalanche on Friday and Saturday.
