It’s good to be green these days. In North Central Washington, sports organizations are keeping in step with the environmental movement, and many are doing their part (some better than others). Here are some ways local sports teams and venues have gone green.

STEVENS PASS

It’s the first and — so far — only downhill ski resort in the Pacific Northwest that uses renewable energy credits from windpower to offset all of its energy use during in the high-energy winter. Also, the Stevens Pass Ski Area’s transit fleet (for employees), which has been around for more than 10 years, has led the ski area to be named one of the best workplaces for commuters by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

WENATCHEE APPLESOX

This past summer, the baseball club included an energy conservation trivia quiz as part of its between-inning entertainment. A child would be plucked from the stands, asked three energy conservation-centric questions, then would win a gift bag that was filled with conservation- and recycling-themed prizes, including an energy-saving CFL light bulb.

METHOW VALLEY SPORT TRAILS

The non-profit organization worked with carbon-offsetting company TerraPass to calculate its carbon footprint, so it switched all its grooming equipment to diesel. It couldn’t switch to bio-diesel, however, as it wouldn’t allow the grooming eqiupment to operate in single-digit temperatures.
