LEAVENWORTH — Violin genius Midori performs Feb. 4 at Sleeping Lady Chapel Theater, in a concert organized by the Icicle Creek Music Center.
Born Midori Goto, the musician has ranked among the leading lights of classical performers since her debut with the New York Philharmonic at age 11. This was followed by a powerful 1986 performance at Tanglewood under conductor Leonard Bernstein, where she carried out her solo on Bernstein’s complex “Serenade After Plato’s Symposium” despite breaking the strings on two different violins.
Since then, Midori has recorded more than a dozen CDs tackling the music of Bartok, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Dvorák and other masters. She frequently tours and teaches, now chairing the string department of the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music. Beyond her musical work, Midori holds a master’s degree in psychology. Her Feb. 4 Leavenworth engagement includes a pre-concert talk, master class and Q&A session.
The concert is underwritten by the Sleeping Lady Foundation. Tickets are now available through Icicle Creek Music Center.
