PESHASTIN — A bicyclist from Leavenworth, who was on his way to church, died late Sunday afternoon after colliding with a tow truck on Blewett Pass Highway.

The crash happened about 4:30 p.m., about one mile south of the intersection of Highway 2 and 97.

Randal J. Thomas, 47, was pronounced dead at Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee due to head injuries, according to a State Patrol report. Thomas and the tow truck were both heading south on the highway, with Thomas riding on the shoulder, when Thomas made a left turn in front of the tow truck, the report stated.

The driver of the tow truck, Kenneth W. Snart, 48, of North Bend, was not injured.

The accident happened in front of a small church called Leavenworth Christian Fellowship. Pastor Mike McGrath said Thomas attended Spirit Life Center in Leavenworth but had been coming to some services at Leavenworth Christian Fellowship recently. He described Thomas as “a really sweet guy. His heart was to find a way that he could serve the Lord.” Delores Hall, a member of Leavenworth Christian Fellowship, called Thomas “a caring person.” Hall said Thomas’s only means of transportation was walking or bike riding, and members of Leavenworth Christian Fellowship would give him a ride back home after the 5:30 p.m. Sunday service. She said he did cleaning work for Sandy’s Waffle & Dinner Haus in Leavenworth.
