Appeal hearing delayed for avalanche condemnation

WENATCHEE — The owners of eight vacation homes near Lake Wenatchee can stay at their properties for now, despite a Chelan County order barring them from the premises for winter.
The appeal was scheduled to go before a Chelan County hearings examiner Tuesday, but the hearing was delayed because attorneys needed more time to gather information. The county waived the order while the case is pending, said Kirk Bromiley, the homeowners’ attorney.
The eight homes were built below a steep, treeless ravine at Kahler Glen Golf & Ski Resort.
Chelan County commissioners issued the order last summer in response to a powerful avalanche that destroyed one home in the neighborhood in 2008. The order prohibits anyone from occupying the homes from Dec. 1 to March 31.
County officials said the hearing will likely be rescheduled before mid-December.

You know, if you want to build a house at the base of an avalanche chute, go for it. Just don't expect anyone to come rescue you if your house gets buried or knocked over. People over in Seattle's Magnolia neighborhood have houses built on the top and bottom of huge cliffs, and at least one or two of them get washed out each year. I guess that's the price you pay for a nice view! Look up Perkins Lane Landslides on google sometime.....
