WATERVILLE — A 55-year old man who owns property where several animals were confiscated and a boy was taken into protective custody was charged with gun crimes Oct. 26.

Douglas County Prosecutor’s Office charged Riley J. Kalk with three counts of first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm, a felony with a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment and/or a $20,000 fine.

Douglas County Detective David Helvey secured and executed a search warrant Oct. 22 on a rural property six miles northwest of Mansfield, where Kalk lived.

Helvey told The World Wednesday that he went to the property earlier with a Department of Social and Health Services employee to conduct a child welfare check at the property and noticed a shotgun through one of the trailer windows.

He said he did a background check on Kalk and learned that he had been convicted of two felonies, one in New York and one in Washington, and is not allowed to possess firearms.

Helvey’s inventory list of items found in a travel trailer and motorhome include nine handguns, one submachine gun, five rifles, two stun guns, two sniper scopes, ammunition and magazines.

Kalk is being held at the Chelan County Regional Jail on a $2,500 cash bond and his trial has been set for Dec. 17.

Wenatchee Valley Humane Society officers seized four of Kalk’s dogs on Oct. 22.

Another two dogs and five cats, one of which was dead, were seized. They were owned by Kathleen C. Walls, 49, of Everett. Walls and her son were living on Kalk’s property, but Walls had been gone for several weeks and left the boy and pets, according to a report by Humane Society Officer Kerry Bayliss. Several of the animals were emaciated. Walls was charged with first- and second-degree animal cruelty Nov. 10.

If he's been gone for several weeks, and someone else was living there, it seems to me that it would be hard to prove that he was "in possession" of whatever arms were found. Sounds like an absentee landlord.

I believe there is a misunderstanding. From what I gathered, Miss Walls was staying on the property belonging to the individual discussed in this story (Mr. Kalk). I believe that Ms.Walls has been gone, not Mr. Kalk (the man listed in this story). Perhaps the reporter or Ms. Pruitt could clarify before any speculates any furthur? It sounds as if there is some confusion

That is correct Mr. Patterson. Ms. Walls was not on the property at the time. Mr. Kalk was at home, on his property and the guns were found in his two trailers, according to the deputy. Sorry for not clearing up the misunderstanding earlier.
