A crowd gathers for Bavarian music at the Front Street gazebo in Leavenworth. German-flavored entertainment is always on tap in the Bavarian Village, but especially at Oktoberfest time.

Food, music, dancing and ... oh, what’s that other thing they do at Oktoberfest? It’s on the tip of my tongue ...

Defy gravity, or at least dream of it, at this weekend’s Wings and Wheels celebration in East Wenatchee.

Sometimes festivals are like trying to catch a cab — you wait around a while and then three show up at once.

This weekend’s festivities in NCW will send the partygoer spinning to all points of the compass ... well, mostly East Wenatchee and points upriver. Plane and car aficionados can get their fill of both when the seventh annual Wings and Wheels gasses up at Eastmont Community Park and Pangborn Memorial Airport; Cashmere harvests some fun with its old-timey Apple Days celebration at the Cashmere Museum and Pioneer Village; and Leavenworth capitalizes on the autumnal quest for beer and schnitzel with its 12th annual Oktoberfest, centered on the downtown Festhalle auditorium.

You may not make it to all these celebrations, but between them, they satisfy a range of interests. If you stay inside all weekend, you’re missing out three ways to Sunday.

East Wenatchee

Wings and Wheels festival Today through Sunday; Eastmont Community Park; free; east-wenatchee.com/wingsandwheels 886-6108

The town that hosted Pangborn and Herndon’s belly-landing Oct. 5, 1931 throws its seventh celebration of all things avionic and automotive. Beyond the main events at Eastmont Community Park, visit Pangborn Memorial Airport on “Aviation Day” Saturday for special events and $20 airplane rides with the Wings of Wenatchee. (Airplane rides continue Sunday.) Between radio-controlled cars, show-and-shines, aircraft displays and a carnival, there’s a lot of ways to celebrate the conveyances that carry us.

Bite into Cashmere’s Apple Days festival with family activities, live music and quilts, quilts and more quilts. Enjoy demonstrations and horse rides by the Tillicum Riders, demonstrations and a booksigning by acclaimed artist William F. Reese and performances by Joan Tucker and an old-time gospel singing group. Regular events returning include the Oregon Trail Travelers, the Shootists, an Indian encampment, and flintknapping and gold panning. There’s also an apple pie contest, bake sale and book sale. Breakfast is included with admission on Saturday. Music starts at 11 a.m. daily, with performances by Prairie Flyer from Spokane, the Panhandle Polecats from Idaho, Troy T-Bone Lucas from East Wenatchee and (on Sunday) the Cashmere High School Bulldogs marching band. You can munch a plate of barbecue for another $7.

Leavenworth

Leavenworth Oktoberfest Friday, Saturday and Oct. 9-10, 16-17; Leavenworth Festhalle, 1001 Front St.; $10 Fridays, $15 Saturdays; leavenworthoktoberfest.com 548-7021

The yearly Bavarian brewfest has grown since its 1998 introduction, and now occupies three big weekends throughout the month. Beer! Dancing! Beer! Bratwurst! Beer! Funny hats! Beer! Accordions! Did we mention beer? A procession from Ski Hill Drive to the Leavenworth Festhalle begins the fun each Saturday at 1 p.m. The party spills out into two more Front Street venues as local and imported oompah bands and German-flavored entertainers perform on the Festhalle stage and outdoor beergardens.
