Entiat schools report 10.5 percent absent
Monday, October 5, 2009
ENTIAT — More than 10 percent of students at Entiat Junior Senior High were absent Thursday.
School officials say students are suffering from common cold and flu symptoms: Fever, runny nose, chest congestion and muscle aches. Superintendent Mike Wyant said one Entiat family reported their child tested positive for H1N1 flu, or swine flu, in the past two weeks, Wyant said.
Schools with absentee rates more than 10 percent are required to consult the Chelan-Douglas Health District. Entiat School District was the first in the region this school year to do so.
Wyant said the school began reaching the 10-percent mark early last week. He did not have absentee rates for Friday and Monday.
Hand sanitizer is available in classrooms, the school nurse is sending sick children home and teachers are re-teaching proper hygiene, Wyant said.
He asked families to keep sick children home at least 24 hours after the fever subsides without the use of medication.
