H1N1 worries rank low among parents
Monday, October 19, 2009
EAST WENATCHEE — Jeff Slough has good reason to worry about his kids getting the H1N1 flu.
He would probably get it too, and become very ill.
“I’m immunosuppressed because I’m a transplant patient,” the Wenatchee man said.
On a worry scale of 1 to 10, Slough placed his at a 7. But 18 other parents interviewed at Kirby Billingsley Hydro Park east of East Wenatchee Saturday had worry levels much lower, between 3 and 5. The parents were interviewed during a soccer game at the park. Each was asked, on a 1-10 scale to rank how worried they were about their kids getting H1N1 flu, also known as swine flu.
“I’m not worried at all,” said Brent Johnston of Wenatchee. “I know flu is out there but if you wash your hands, eat healthy and get enough rest you should be OK.”
“Nobody we associate with has been adversely affected by it,” said Megan Lamon of Wenatchee.
“I just see it as just another strain of flu,” said Nat Bergstrom of East Wenatchee.
Shela Hemstrom of Cashmere said she knows people whose children have had the H1N1 flu and “their kids made it through.”
“I think it’s a bunch of hype, really,” said Katie Maxey of East Wenatchee.
“I think the pharmaceutical manufacturers made it up to make us scared so we’d buy their stuff,” said Carlton Whitmire of Wenatchee.
In the minority were people like Guy Caldwell of East Wenatchee. He placed his worry level at a 7 and said the H1N1 flu “is getting pretty prominent out there. It’s very contagious and it’s not going away.”
Kirsten Ryles of Wenatchee put her worry level at an 8, and said it’s because the H1N1 flu is prevalent in the Wenatchee Valley and it “tends to attack healthier people, and more severely.”
Jenny Davis of Wenatchee thinks she had H1N1 flu. She said she thinks it’s a serious concern, about an 8. “It moved into pneumonia and I’ve been sick for about a month,” she said.
Dawn Gangle ranked her concern level at a 5 and said she wants more information on flu symptoms and the course the illness usually runs. “At what point do we get before we take our kid to the doctor?” she asked. “If you wait, then, all of a sudden, after three days, I might find myself taking my kid to the hospital because it’s too late.”
Parents also were asked if they would have their children vaccinated against the illness. Out of the 19 people questioned, nine said yes, three said no and seven said maybe.
Hemstrom, like most of the “maybes,” said she wants to wait to see if there are any side effects from the vaccine.

Well I say to Katie Maxey, thats in this article, do you think the parents of children who have died from it think it's a bunch of hype as you put it. The news stated the other day 14 children in the United states have died from it. I my self am worried for my child and my grandkids. I have gone to carrying hand sanitizer in my car and purse. When we leave a store or where ever we sanitize our hands. We also wipe our grocery cart handles off with the wipies the stores provide. I am beginning to think by the time the shots ever get around for the public it may be to late. I really think they should go to the schools and give the kids all shots like they did back in years past. There are side effects from any type of shots, some just are affected by them. I will get my son the shot and I know my grandkids will also get it, if and whenever it becomes available. I would never forgive myself if I didn't and one of them got it, and died and it could have been prevented.

As pointless as this "survey" is it does point out how ignorant an "informed" public can be. Do some research for yourself. Climb off your soapbox and quit preaching your opinion that's based on the media hype. (That means you Dawn).
Look up 2009 flu pandemic on Wikipedia.
From March to Sept 593 deaths in the US from H1N1. The regular flu kills 50,000 to 60,000 a year.

Can you imagine how heartless you sound Psycho. it ONLY killed 593... but what if just ONE of those people was your mother, spouse or child.

I can't believe people are so rude to put others down for taking a precaution that could save lives. Do you take CPR classes?? Do you wear a seat belt?? Do you take vitamins or watch your cholesterol? Then why not keep safe from Influenza?

My sister-in-law has been sick for 2 weeks now. Her swine flu turned straight into Pneumonia and she probably won't be well for another 2-4 weeks. I'm sorry but that is scary and personally I don't have the time or energy to deal with something like that SO I'm getting vaccinated. I also feel it is my duty to keep my friends and family safe who have a high chance of being among your 593 deaths.

This is a perfectly valid opinion, but it is highly flawed, imo. I don't care how well you eat, how much Vitamin D you take or whatever vitamin supplement you believe in, or how often you wash your hands, because if you become exposed to this virus you will most likely get very, very sick.
Personally, I hate the flu! We were in the process of remodeling our home the last time I was sick with it. That was fifteen years ago and I couldn't stop work because I had to stay even with our builder in order for the project to move forward. I hated every minute of it! Coughing with a headache and high fever and deep congestion while I was trying to measure twice and cut once. I swore I would do my utmost to never go through that ever again. So I guess I am a strong advocate of the flu vaccine since I have had my annual shot ever since and have never had the flu since that time! Last week-end my wife and I got our flu shots at the local Costco. Twenty bucks is cheap insurance against feeling like a sick dog! Why anyone would not want to get their flu shot is beyond me, but some folks actually believe there is an evil lurking within the vaccine! Well, there is a dead viral skeleton in there, but that's about all. No hidden microchips and no hidden agenda, lol.
If the H1N1 vaccine becomes available to low risk adults such as myself, I will be the first in line!
